Bethany Beach, Delaware
United States
Seashore Striders Event Productions, Inc.
70F / 21C
Total Time = 2h 15m 30s
Overall Rank = 328/415
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 23/25
Pre-race routine:

Look around lost and confused
Event warmup:

Walked 1000m to the swim start.
  • 17m 7s
  • 1094 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards

Took a few minutes to get my breathing down and to let the cold water settle.
What would you do differently?:

Transition 1
  • 06m 34s

Horrible Transition. Couldn't breathe from lack of training, couldn't get my jersey on from being too fat.
What would you do differently?:

Have all my gear better organized in a systematic manner. Race belt for the bib. Seriously consider a tri-suit.
  • 1h 06m 25s
  • 18.64 miles
  • 16.84 mile/hr

Bike felt good. Slow at first, but maintained a decent pace.
What would you do differently?:

Train more, pedal harder.
Transition 2
  • 02m 53s

Not as big a disaster as T1.
What would you do differently?:

Have my gear better organized for maximum efficiency
  • 42m 28s
  • 4.35 miles
  • 09m 46s  min/mile

Coming off the bike into the run was the hardest part of the race for me. My legs just didn't want to work. That first mile was brutal, but I just powered through it. I think I honestly paced better than I ever do running at home.
What would you do differently?:

Train more!
Post race
Warm down:

Bar-B-Que pork and beer!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training, nagging knee injury, poor nutrition, etc.

Event comments:

Awesome race!!!

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

This past spring I realized a few of us were heading in the wrong direction physically. We were getting together for poker games and kids’ birthdays, but that was it.

I went down to the beach the day before to scout out the course, and it was glorious...the sun was out, the sea was as smooth as glass, and only a hint of a breeze was blowing. “Perfect,” I thought.

After your first triathlon, how many days off should you take to rest? How should you start your training again?

My first duathlon was a success. I had so many fears before the race but none of those fears happened. And when it was all over, I felt I had accomplished something big.

Pursuing a challenge, which took a year to get down to mentally and a few weeks of actual training!
