Hey all you Winter Weather Experts......

I think we're in for a long winter and I'm finally ready to get myself out to face the elements. I am wondering if any of you can tell me if an old hybrid comfort bike could handle a ride in the snow? We have about 3 or 4 inches of fresh fallen snow and it is still coming down. I have never attempted this before so I have no clue.

It's just like this bike but a ladies model:

Thanks!

Going to be pretty tough to be honest with you - I would look for a 26" mtn bike minimum and run 2.3" or 2.4" if you can. I was out on 3.8" tires today and sliding around and fighting for traction a lot. I started on a 26 Single Speed and made it alright until it got real loose but those 700 tires are not going to be very stable on snow covered roads. Good luck!

Ok, thanks for the info!

My evening bike commute was too warm yesterday for any points. For better or worse the weather has turned colder (with some snow and wind thrown in) so today should be much better points-wise.

The side streets in Calgary don't get plowed, so they're awful on the bike this week with rutted tire tracks and mounds of snow all over the place. I'm encountering some of spots where I need to get off the bike and walk. Also one wipeout today and lots of cases where I need to put one foot down to prevent a skid from turning into a wipeout. The MUPs and busier streets are much better because they get plowed or swept.

My riding is just for commuting - there's not much point in going outside for training rides these days.

I'm wondering what type of road conditions others are dealing with?

Bill

Can you put larger tires on a mountain bike? It would be great to get some biking in, just can't afford a new bike.
And, they just opened up a fat tire course in town.

No exercise for me on Christmas Day. Then today (Boxing Day) I did some cross country skiing for 90 minutes but the temperature was around 5 Celsius - so it was too warm for any points. I checked my tracking spreadsheet and this is the first time since the start of the challenge that I have had 0 points for two days in a row. The weather tomorrow doesn't look very promising - maybe if I get out early enough for my run it will still be cold enough for some points.

The other downside to the warm weather is that the skiing was pretty slow - fortunately I was skate skiing today so I didn't have to mess with any of the gooey warm weather grip waxes.

Bill and Lenny, it looks like you have some better (i.e. crappier) weather this week.

Woo hoo!  Let the games begin!!!  9am and I've already got a 300 pointer in and the day is just beginning.  The weather dropped overnight so its below -12 (feels like -25) and we've got tons of snow!  Even though you get high crappy weather points it's still very beautiful.  A winter run - icicles on the eyelashes - at dawn and just getting ready to hit the slopes.

Here's a question for the group - I'm trying to watch my weight so I don't gain over the holidays and so doing the whole calorie in - calorie out thing but the calculators for downhill skiing are ridiculous.  They say I burn over 500 calories per hour but I kept track yesterday and I'd say I get about one run in every 15 minutes so that's 10 minutes waiting in line or sitting on the lift.  So I'm thinking it's probably 5 minutes of exercise every 15 minutes.  Thoughts?  It doesn't even really feel like cardio - more like strength training.  Being so early in the season my quads are bit tender from all the work.

Anyway - I hope you are all having some beautiful crappy weather too as we start off 2014!

Hi folks! I am trying (no pun intended) to get back up and running with logging on BT to keep myself respectable. I've been running in some pretty cold temps (coldest was -8 actual temp) but don't think I could back date miles for the challenge. AMAZING how Vaseline protects ones face in extreme temps! Love it!
Anyhow-
Can I still join?
And some gorgeous pics here!! thanks for sharing.

Had another great run today. It was - 25 (- 13 F) but sunny with little wind so it felt comfortable. Gotta love the still days.

Bill usually provides the answers to procedural questions but I think it's pretty safe to say that you can still join. If you can find a way to look up the weather history I'm sure that back-dating is also okay.

Glad that you enjoyed the pics I posted. In the first post Bill encouraged posting of photos but so far I think that I am the only one that has posted any. Come on folks - what does crappy winter weather look like in your part of the world?

Is there some confusion about dates? There are a couple of entries for the week of 1/6 - 1/12 despite the fact that it's only Jan 5.

It managed to get out for some XC skiing in -20 Celsius today. They've track set a golf course that is less than a km from my house and we have lots of snow to ski on this year. It's actually more snow than we've had in December for more than 100 years.

thanks for the info but at this point, can't see trying to back date temperatures. I may just pop in to offer some support and cheer y'all on!

And yes, it's supposed to only be a high of -12 F tomorrow here in Northeast Wisconsin. Wind chills are forecast to be -40 to -50 below. Frost bite can occur within 10 mins of exposure. I won't run for fear of losing my nose or a couple of digits (fingers) LOL
I am tempted to run believe me, but don't want to be foolish and wind up falling and getting stuck in a snow bank in that sort of weather.

You guys faced with really cold and wintery weather - take care and be safe!

BTW...just got some ICEBUGS - cleated running shoes. AWESOME in snow and ice and supposed to be great on trails too. Far superior to the YAKTRAX I've run in so far. But time will tell I suppose but so far...very impressed.

You are braver than I am Lenny - we had the same wind chill around here today and I just hung out inside by the fireplace!

Yeah, keep that up and you just might find yourself in first place. Oh wait you are in first place - well done.

Wow. Amazing. I know I can't compete with that^^!

I took advantage of the 10 deg F weather here in VA to get some suckitude. But it was really a very nice run.

More photos. It's getting too warm for cross country skiing in Calgary but by heading west towards Banff there's better weather, and much better scenery. These are from Jan 10.

Very quiet out here this winter. Everyone must be enjoying the cold.
Looks like we are in for another week of below zero. This has been a tough winter already and it is still January.
