  • 5 kms

Comments:

Straight up a long drag on grass then onto large loose gravel made for a difficult start. I pushed fairly hard up this then eased off slightly when I got to the tarmacked section.
Transition 1
  • 00m 58s
Bike
  • 36m 27s
  • 20 kms
  • 32.92 km/hr
Comments:

I took the start fairly easily as there was a bit of congestion and the road was narrow and windy so I didn't want to take the risk of passing. Eventually passed the congestion and got into a rhythm. I felt good up the hills and tried to keep in the big ring, which meant standing at times.
I probably could have pushed a bit harder on the bike at times but I was fairly pleased with my time.
Transition 2
  • 00m 44s
Run
  • 21m 23s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 17s  min/km
Comments:

My legs felt tired going up the hill straight from transition but I gradually eased into feeling better. I felt as though my heart and lungs would have allowed me to go faster at times but my legs wouldn't. I kept a fairly even pace throughout and managed to increase it slightly towards the end.
I felt as though my second run would have been a minute or two slower than my first, but it was actually a few seconds faster. One one hand I am pleased I managed to run an even split but on the other, I think it is an indication I went too easy on the first run or the bike.

Event comments:

The bike mount and dismount lines were very narrow and got congested at times (according to spectators). This didn't bother me as I was taking it easy here. Also the runners out of T1 and the cyclists shared the same exit which caused problems at times (there were multiple distances running at the same time).

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

"I was wondering if this is a sensible approach? Should I get "better" on short distance and then move to something longer or do what I want if I feel I can do it whatever the time?"
