Pre-race routine:

Oatmeal & Bagel for breakfast - drove to T2 buss to start which was about 1 hour on overheating school bus. Very organized. Took a gel, checked equipment
Event warmup:

Panic - I didn't have my goggles. Luckily I was given a pair and they worked! You have to swim to the start which was about 100 yards out and that was my swim warmup.
Swim
  • 45m 36s
  • 2500 meters
  • 01m 49s / 100 meters
Comments:

Nice swim. Water felt warm compared to the air. First race in a long time without any cramps!
What would you do differently?:

Train.
Transition 1
  • 06m 23s
Comments:

Tough transition due to cold and my towel was wet. They have you grab your bag, go to tent and then go to bike. It is a long transition in a steamy tent.
What would you do differently?:

Dry towel and due to cold weatther to a complete change and include full shoe protectors.
Bike
  • 4h 37m 58s
  • 106 kms
  • 22.88 km/hr
Comments:

Had a flat which took another 15 minutes. Cold and rain during the fastest part of course. I just wasn't prepared and so rode conservatively. My gearing was a compact front with 12-27 rear. Worked great.
What would you do differently?:

train
Transition 2
  • 02m 36s
Comments:

Decent transition. Changed socks and took off a ton of wet layers.
Run
  • 1h 06m 19s
  • 12 kms
  • 05m 32s  min/km
Comments:

Had a good run. Finally felt my feet at 4 miles in. Had a good run for the day and finished with no problems
What would you do differently?:

Was prepared for the run and it was good to do it without having to walk.
Post race
Warm down:

Shivered and finally found my clothes. Had a great buffet set up so I ate and then had the most amazing post race message ever. Cold finish so I listened to the band for a while which was really good then went back to hotel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My training. Tough year for work and home and just didn't pull it off.

Event comments:

Love this race compared to WTC events. Very friendly and helpful people. Tough course and will do it again. This time, I'll train.

I was humbled last year. My body shut down on me just before two World Championship events. I was originally in top form to medal in both, but my strength was sapped from me.

Byrn won’t hold your hand through the long hours and miles required finishing or for success in an IM, he can only show you how to get there. The work is up to you.

I take for granted getting to train and how fortunate I am to have the health that I have. Life…it doesn’t seem fair and it’s not always fair.

I had a great experience being a volunteer, but used the time to educate myself on anything that could allow me to have a better race or pass something on to the readers at BT.
