Dennis - nice job on the swim, but a couple of helpful observations. If your tri swim is in open water (which is really the way it needs to be), the only similarity with your pool experience will be the water. Open water brings many variables which don't exist in the pool - notably contact with other swimmers (which can be violent), opaque water, current, sunlight/glare, wind, sighting (which is a skill unto itself!) and the possible use of a wetsuit (which is great because it provides added buoyancy and speed, but can be claustrophobic). Prior open water experience is critical from a confidence and safety perspective - don't let race day be your first day in open water. Because of all these variables, don't shoot for 500M as a goal just because it coincides with your race distance. I'd shoot for a 1000M goal so that you know if things go wrong in the swim, you have what it takes to be safe. I'm not trying to burst your bubble, but I have be in panicked situations during the swim and it can be downright terrifying. Do whatever you can to build confidence. Being safe is the only important thing.

Thanks for the advice Joe(you too Mark) and I completely agree. I think I still need more time in the pool before I try the open water but I do have plans to try the open water soon. I have access to a local Tri group that meets every Thursday evening for open water swims. I haven’t tried meeting up with the group yet because they training distances they do on a regular basis are outside of my abilities (for now). I am currently planning out taking the rest of the month and part of June to get more comfortable in the water and try to build more distance. I will probably take the last 6 weeks leading up to my first Tri and train in open water with and without a group.

Also, I have seen advice given to others to hang back from the group of the swim leg if it’s their first race. The sensible side of me is ok with that but the competitive side of me is not. What are your thoughts?

Hola amigos, just got back late last night from a 2 week biz/fun trip to Europe.  Did not do much training for a nice change of pace, other than 4 rave runs (in Amsterdam, Brussels and Blois in FR), but got to walk over 20k every day.  Due to my ITB injury, I dropped the IM race I was training for (Challenge USA in AC in June), so it was really nice to be able to enjoy my trip without the stress of an upcoming race. After all the daily doses of good beer, wine, pastries, etc. I now am ready to get back into training and burn some excess pounds!

Jim, sorry to hear about your accident, are you better now and did you break anything?  2 type of cyclists you know, those that have crashed and those that will :-)

Dennis, I just saw that you joined the group and are from Conroe, TX.  I was in your neighborhood yesterday!  On my return from Europe, I had to spend the night in Houston on Tuesday (nightmare story involving United Airlines, Chicago Airport...) and headed out to the Woodlands yesterday for lunch.  It was so nice to see everything set up for IM Texas this Saturday.  That was my first IM in 2012 and I want to do it again maybe in 2015.

I expect everyone to roll forward into the new group...just kidding. I hope everyone does but I completely get people needing to find the group that fits them best.

@Joe congrats on the podium finish in the DU

@Jim speedy recovery

@Dennis I love my 910XT. Used to have the Forerunner 305, no comparison.

@Drew whatever time you were waking up, try waking up 30 min earlier for one or two days, then 60 min earlier for one or two days. You have to acclimate your body to it.

@Mitch if you have a car in Austin (or if you start really early) you can join the ride I usually host when I'm not working in FL. It's a beginner/intermediate ride that starts up on Shoal Creek Blvd. It's an easy bike commute from downtown. http://www.meetup.com/Austin-Cycling-Meetup/and http://www.meetup.com/triathlon-105/are the two places to look for events in the area.

@Gabe I had IT problems when I first started training. I went to an ART chiro (who died his hair pink for IM FL this weekend), I have several really good stretches, I love my foam roller and I switched to speedplay pedals with lots of float. Let me know if you want any more info.

Strava guys I'll follow you.

I know I owe a bio, but work is crazy!

12k run this afternoon. Finished at 6pm after dark, the days are much shorter now on this side of the planet, winter is just around the corner. It felt great to run and not sweat like crazy.

Dennis, my $0.02: get in the water, relax, but swim at your pace. There will be people much slower than you, there's no point swimming behind them, there will also be people swimming faster, there's no point racing them either. Do your thing, your swim time will surprise you! You will gain speed from the wetsuit, you will gain some from drafting (and in many races the swim distance tends to be measured a bit short... don't ask me why).

^^^^x10. If you are a novice swimmer, assume and expect yourself to be back of the pack even in optimal conditions. Regardless of your competitiveness, recognize that the 25-100 of your close friends swimming next to or on top of you have more experience than you, which creates for them a huge advantage. A realistic goal is completing the swim, feeling good in the water and wanting to do it again. With no prior race experience, whatever time you set will be a PR. As an aside, you have indicated that your swimming distances in meters - are you lucky enough to have access to metered pool? Most U.S. short course pools are measured in yards and high school and collegiate swimmers race yards in short course pools. If you are in fact swimming yards and racing your tri meters, bear in mind 1 yard = .9114 meters.

thanks Jackie.

I was going to order it earlier this week but got side tracked and your post reminded me I still needed to place my order. I went to Amazon to place my order and lo and behold they are on sale from $399.00 to $299.00." I don't always procrastinate, but when I do I save $100.00"

Don't know if this is a better deal, but sent it anyway. If I didn't have this, I would definitely buy it!
