I thought Bruno Mars was really good. I thought he was an odd choice-- the first SB in NYC, and you would have expected (or at least I would have expected) some more iconically local act (Bon Jovi, Bruce, someone like that). The choice of Bruno Mars, who's still a fairly new artist, and the RHCP's, an iconically LA band, was a head-scratcher to me.

Someone told me (so I don't have a source I can cite) that the Chili Peppers were a late addition. Supposedly, someone decided that Bruno Mars by himself didn't have a wide enough demographic appeal (ie., "they needed someone who appealed more to straight men") Originally, it was just going to be Bruno by himself, which is why it seemed a little awkward when the RHCP's took the stage and they performed side-by-side. I don't think they had much time to rehearse together and, again, from what I was told, when it was suggested to Bruno that he step aside when the RHCP's came on, he told them he wasn't going anywhere, since he had originally been promised the whole halftime show to himself. I thought it worked, though. They're all pros and it came off well, even if it seemed a little more unscripted and unchoreographed than you usually see in a halftime show.

The story I heard was that Bruno wanted the RHCP from the beginning with him.

So what music is it that appeals to straight men? I'm curious what you mean by that because I'm assuming Bruno Mars isn't your cup of tea. Are you suggesting that the only people who like Bruno are gays?

I thought that it was a good show. My 13 year old daughter has a poster of Bruno Mars in her room and plays his music at least once a day, so I actually knew the songs that he played. I liked the returning soldier scenes during the last song "Just the way you are".

As much as I like the RHCPs I thought that they took away from the performance and really didn't fit in.

agreed.  i love the chili peppers and was looking forward to see how they would "mash up" the 2 groups.  that's the point, right?  but instead, they just came out, killed one song, and left.  it didn't make much sense in the continuity of a show.

Not a Bruno Mars fan really, but thought he did a pretty good job...it was entertaining.
More entertaining than the game, anyway.

If you have ever tried to play or sing music, outdoors, with a group, you would find out how difficult it really is to pull that off. They don't have the luxury of monitors so they can hear themselves. The echo in that stadium would be insane, crowd noise, the music, it would be absolute chaos. The only way to do it would be to wear earphones that completely blocked off all other sound. Even then it can be difficult to get a real feel for what is going on when you are wearing earphones. I have played many live concerts in a 5-7 piece group, it is difficult even on a small scale. On the Superbowl scale it would be dang near impossible.

Kudos to them if the rumors are wrong and they did actually sing and play, but no points taken IMO if they did not. The logistics for that situation would be near impossible to manage.

Forgot to add all that dancing around and such, would make it even worse.

vocals at the superbowl are live - everything else is pre-recorded and mimed.

According to Flea from RHCP the instruments were pre-recorded but the vocals were live. That's a call from the NFL because they can't take the chance of it sounding like crap with that short of a set up. They didn't like it either but it's the Superbowl and couldn't pass it up. That's why they didn't even pretend to plug in.

Makes sense to me. Trying to coordinate instruments and vocals in that environment would have any group in trouble. However with canned music pumped into earphones I could see pulling off the vocals.

And I did seem to remember the RHCP singer getting behind a bit at one point, sounded a bit out of breath due to all the jumping around, so I could believe it was real.

Either way it was a good show IMO.

As the fog cleared, the buoy that I first saw earlier in the morning was just the first marker in a very long line of buoys that stretched across the lake like a runway for a 747 jetliner.

Already a cyclist and not a bad swimmer, I figured all I had to do was build up to running a few miles and I’d be ready to go. The challenge invigorated me, and I ran out to buy new running shoes.

Since I didn't have much time and since it's a super sprint, am I OK just go to at the training relatively hard through Thursday or even Friday?
