United States
Race Texas
52F / 11C
Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 03m 37s
Overall Rank = 14/307
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 2/22
Pre-race routine:

Got a muffin from LQ breakfast bar and ate on the drive over to the race site. Drank some water and forgot to take either my gel or work on the coke I bought, but energy was good for most of the race
Event warmup:

Got to swim for about 100m and shake things out, but would use the swim to get warmed up and ready
Swim
  • 07m 38s
  • 400 meters
  • 01m 55s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not bad after working hard in Jan / Feb, then moving and having no indoor pool in the area.
What would you do differently?:

Still need to get in the pool more, but another month the pools will be open!
Transition 1
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

Had to walk until you got out of the building, but felt good to run it! Made a rookie mistake and left sunglasses in my bag, so had to unzip bag, move to bike and continue with my T1. Was 6 seconds faster than my projection
What would you do differently?:

Work on my transitions for next race
Bike
  • 33m 12s
  • 12 miles
  • 21.69 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good, but when the wind was quartering / headwind, slowed me up by about 4-5 mph. Wet roads but seemed very safe, still watched the turns and any paint/tape on roads, but not passed by anyone that stuck (2xpasses) and passed many. Was 3:07 slower than my projection
What would you do differently?:

Still maintain/improve my fitness, seems I let up too much into the wind, with the wind put the hammer down. Will get aero wheels next year!
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Got a few comments about never seeing anyone run that fast with a bike into T2, so not too bad! Still should have been better, need to set up multisport mode for the Garmin next time, but grabbed everything and went pretty fast. Was 16 seconds slower than my projection
What would you do differently?:

Set up multisport mode next time, had quick release watch strap on and that worked great, plus grabbing belt and running with it works well. Still gotta work on no sock running!
Run
  • 20m 21s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 04s  min/km
Comments:

Was 9 seconds faster than my projection, so about right, need to get some good speed work in for next race!
What would you do differently?:

Work a bit on speed and continue to build my base mileage!
Post race
Warm down:

Had a nice lady unzip my top, and walked around until I realized I hadn't stopped my watch, oops, got some gatorade got my bag and hit the showers for a nice HOT shower that helped. They cancelled the awards due to rain

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need more swim, bike and run fitness, but not a bad opener for me

Event comments:

Wasn't too bad, but very hard to hear in the Natorium, body marking was ugly (wrong tipped markers, conflicting guidance given to volunteers), but the weather didn't help that out much. Course marshalling wasn't too bad, some of the volunteers looked like they didn't want to be there (don't blame them, it was 52 and rainy!) but still thanked them all as I headed pass them and cheered them up a little! Would have been much better on a sunny day, but good job despite the sucky weather!

I'm doing the 22 week sprint tri program and the 2 mile bike ride it starts with is not very challenging. I see this as a opportunity to train the right way and challenge myself. Any ideas?

This past spring I realized a few of us were heading in the wrong direction physically. We were getting together for poker games and kids’ birthdays, but that was it.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

Already a cyclist and not a bad swimmer, I figured all I had to do was build up to running a few miles and I’d be ready to go. The challenge invigorated me, and I ran out to buy new running shoes.
