Pre-race routine:

Alarm rang around 4:45am and got up a few minutes aftewards. Slept around 11:30pm so just about 5 hrs of sleep. This was not an A race so did not taper. Worked out on Friday (S/B/R) and then yesterday (62 mile bike ride in the heat with PBA DB1). Left the house around 5:25 and was parked around 6am. Hit the porta-johns in time for race start but then lightning warning delayed race by 30 min so start became 7:15am instead of 6:45am. Nice thing was that weather was overcast though the start was humid.
Event warmup:

Not much - jogged from car to start area, then jogged back to switch shoes since I wanted to wear the Goretex shoes that was water resistant since rain was in the forecast. It turned out I didn't really need it.

Comments:

Didn't have any expectations for this race as this was my step back training run having run 16.5 miles last weekend. I decided that I was going to start with the 1:40 pace group and run by HR, looking to keep the HR around the high 140's to low 150's, which given the heat, is about right for a marathon or half-ironman run leg type of race. Except for a slight hill where my HR spiked, I was able to keep it in the range until the last couple of miles when I decided to kick a bit. Ran right around 7:40-7:50 pace the first 10 miles or so before picking it up to closer to low 7's by the last 2 miles (primarily downhill/flat).
Left the pace group right around 7 miles as they were going a bit slow and I didn't want to negative split that much. Felt pretty good and kicked just enough in the last 2 miles to finish right under 1:40.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - ran it just fine. Objective of a harder but shorter training run was met as I didn't want to have to take a recovery day tomorrow (bike workout).
Post race
Warm down:

Not much - walked around a bit and stretched. Ate bananas and pancake along with Muscle Milk they were giving away.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training - been running right around 25 mpw mostly on weekends. Could've gone about 2 min or so faster but would have had to push harder and dig deep (which would require recovery)

Event comments:

Great race - about 3,500 people and the course wasn't bad - it was flat and fairly fast. Only thing I wish they would do is to make the 10K walkers stay to one side of the course as I had to weave through them starting around Mile 10.

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
