La Crosse Area YMCA
72F / 22C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 32m 38s
Overall Rank = 26/41
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 3/6
Pre-race routine:

woke up early - had english muffin with almond butter and jelly and some Haute chocolate (special recipe). Made up my coconut water for the bike bottle. Loaded up the truck with gear and headed out. Set up transition and headed to the porta potties.
Event warmup:

a brief swim to test the water which was downright perfect!
Swim
  • 30m 20s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 01s / 100 meters
Comments:

I actually received my new full Xterra wetsuit on Thursday. Got in a short (and first of the year) OWS on Saturday to try out the fit. Discovered the water was surprisingly warmer than I thought it would be for this year. Went home and took my old Xterra wetsuit which is pretty torn up from years of use and cut the arm off at the shoulder and the legs off just above the knee and decided I would use that for the triathlon the next day. worked great, but had a little chafing around the neck.
What would you do differently?:

not much. About as good as the swim gets for me
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

transition was a bit slow. first one of the year. put helmet on then had to take it back off to get sunglasses on...duh! Wet suit was very easy to take off compared to a full suit
What would you do differently?:

put on sunglasses before bike helmet.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 3s
  • 24 miles
  • 19.71 mile/hr
Comments:

started behind a slower cyclist and had difficulty getting around until the course opened up a bit. Not as bike fit as I had been at this point last year. Have been concentrating more on the run with the marathon 4 weeks ago. temperature was great - only drank half bike bottle on the whole course and felt fine.
What would you do differently?:

should have increased bike fitness earlier this year
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

I thought this was fast, but the fastest person in my age group halved my transition time!
What would you do differently?:

go faster :)
Run
  • 46m
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

always my best event of the three. Felt like I got a slow start. Again haven't been doing a ton of bricks this year like last year, so body just not as prepared as it was. I didn't drink anything on the course. Felt like I could have at the last aid station, but decided I'd be stubborn and run through it. So total race intake was one fresh date and half a bike bottle of coconut water.
What would you do differently?:

add more bricks into training
Post race
Warm down:

ate a banana and a sub sandwich. A couple of gatorades and a water. Sat down on the grass with my wife and took it all in. The results board indicated I had finished 4th ( I had finished 4th in my age group the previous two years also). Found out when I got home that I actually took third. Unfortunately we didn't hang around for the awards ceremony - so no podium for me.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of bike fitness and practice running off the bike

Event comments:

This is by far the best race I've taken part in for beginners. They do an awesome job with the newbies.

So you beat 3 guys just on your run time? wow! I'm also impressed that you could do the whole thing on such a small amount of liquid/calories. I would have bonked for sure. or gotten heat exhaustion. or both. Nice race! Too bad you missed the podium. That sort of thing has happened to me more than once.

Should I be working on getting faster at running by doing the longer distances and working up slowly over time or run faster for shorter distances now?

Sport drinks replenish what is lost during exercise, such as electrolytes, water, sugar, while energy drinks are designed to provide a boost in energy.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

This plan is an advanced plan in terms of volume and intensity and appropriate for someone who is looking to go under 5:00 and as fast as 4:30. There isn’t a lot of fluff in the plan.

You can spend a small fortune on these pre-wrapped bundles of energy, thinking they offer magic ingredients-not true. “Energy” simply means “provides calories” and not “will make you feel energetic."

Energy bars and fluid replacement drinks have their place – and will surely be the subject of future reviews – but there is nothing quite like the immediate lift an energy gel can provide.
