Pre-race routine:

Hotel room 60 second walk to transition. Set up, relaxed in the room, and got to race.
Event warmup:

quick run and swim.
Swim
  • 27m 58s
  • 1449 meters
  • 01m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

Great water, clear, and perfect temperature. Nice swim, got a good draft for a while. Time includes a run from beach to transition.
Transition 1
  • 01m 57s
Bike
  • 1h 27m 55s
  • 30 miles
  • 20.47 mile/hr
Comments:

I really liked this course. Rollers, but some quick sections. Lots of shoulder room on the busier roads. Only short sections of beat up roads, which is nice that far north in NH.
What would you do differently?:

Stay on my power. I slacked a bit miles 25-30.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

I got my feet out of the shoes a bit too early. otherwise, uneventful.
Run
  • 52m 45s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

I just can't run fast. The course felt hilly, but looking at the data afterwards, it's not really that bad.
Post race
Warm down:

Watch the kids race their duathlon.

Event comments:

This was great for what it is, a local, independent race. not a ton of frills, but that's not why we do this. Tons of race options sprint tri, oly tri, aquabike, duathlon, and a kids race. the facility is great, with family activities, inexpensive lodging RIGHT AT transition, food, etc. A really nice time, and i'll likely for sure be back her next year. The only thing I'd recommend is maybe pushing the kids race back another 10 minutes. I was in the front half of the finishing Olympic racers and had to run right from my finish line to the kids race start line.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

I signed up for a Sprint in July, an Olympic distance in September, and the Alcatraz tri in October. If I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it all the way.
