Overall Rank = 16/142
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 2/8
Pre-race routine:

Up by 6:15 and out the door by 6:40am. No pre-race packet pickup for this race. I did go drive the bike course the day before.

I have been sick all week so the goals kept changing in my mind. Race morning I was wondering why did I get out of bed

Got to the race at a decent time and did the whole packet pickup thing. I had a terrible transition spot; really my first bad one all year. Just stuck in a corner - my fellow competitors even commented.

Setup transition and went to warmup
Event warmup:

Time was a little close - and its was such a short swim that I decided to not get in the water. I threw on my shoes and went for a mile run down the trail path. Little bit of scouting goes a long way. Did some activation, hit the bathroom and it was about time
Swim
  • 02m 34s
  • 150 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was a disaster in some ways. The guy four in front admitted to making up his time - sure enough yeah he caused a problem. I passed three folks in 150 yards; and it was so congested I had to slow down. I know I could have gone faster in a clear pool.
What would you do differently?:

Should have dropped my seed time; I seriously considered it and should have
Transition 1
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Terrible transition - transition spot did not help.
What would you do differently?:

Hustle
Bike
  • 28m 26s
  • 9.8 miles
  • 20.68 mile/hr
Comments:

Riding the course the day before paid huge dividends. I knew what to expect; went out and road hard. Passed a bunch of folks. Got caught at the every end behind a truck
What would you do differently?:

Not much - little harder the second 5 miles but not by much
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

Again I tried but my spot was so out of the way - terribly hard to make time here
Run
  • 17m 22s
  • 2 miles
  • 08m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

I do zero trail running - none so it is always tough. I ran hard and passed two folks and got passed by two folks. I thought I was a little faster than this but I will take it.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - my HR was truly alarming. I totally screwed up my Garmin during the race
Post race
Warm down:

Got some water - and started to cool down. Eventually I cleaned up, took a shower in the gym as I waited. I finished by 9am and awards did not start until 10:30.

But they had a great breakfast that was super yummy

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was a C race - mentally and physically. I was in town and it was close to home. I had not done a super sprint in 2 years. Fun race and a way to break up training.

Being well would have been nice.

Event comments:

Certainly its not the toughest race but the volunteers made it fun; the breakfast afterwards was good. It was a great race for beginners by and large. enjoyed the experience and totally recommend the race for newbies.

Training in the cold can be effective and fun with some planning. Overall, prepare for the environment, stay hydrated and dry, listen to your body and have a great safe cold weather outing.
