Waco, Texas
United States
Tri-Now
78F / 26C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 12m 55s
Overall Rank = 19/402
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 4/22
Pre-race routine:

Didn't really get my usual pre-race ride or even a run, as I got up to Waco about 30 minutes before transition closed, so nothing I was used to. Gotta plan better next time.
Event warmup:

Stretching and hopping up and down.
Swim
  • 08m 38s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 10s / 100 meters
Comments:

Water was murky and couldn't get in a good pace with the stragglers from the waves ahead of us (we were thrid wave off), so swam more "heads up" than anything
What would you do differently?:

Not sure, lots of congestion on the swim course
Transition 1
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

This was a long run up the ramp to the transition area. Not much could be done, but was a fast T1 for me regardless. Put socks on in T1 (normally in T2 before run). Was 3rd in AG and 24th OA T1 time, so must have done something right! Fastest T1 was 1:45, so didn't lose much.
What would you do differently?:

Was good, just need to get faster in the water!
Bike
  • 34m 46s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 21.40 mile/hr
Comments:

Went out hard and passed a ton of people from the other two waves (20s and 30s), started to get gassed towards the end of the bike, but still felt good.
What would you do differently?:

Need to keep my base miles higher and work on speed a bit more
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

A bit slow, but still a fast T2 with how long it was, but fast nonetheless! 2nd in AG and 38 OA.
What would you do differently?:

I like the socks on in T1, might be worth the extra time, so I can go from bike to run faster
Run
  • 26m 2s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 07m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt slow and had to pee during the run (too much water on the bike). Felt very sluggish, should have been 2-3 minutes faster overall, but I think it was not enough fuel
What would you do differently?:

Fuel on the bike to set up a stronger run
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around after throwing up water at the finish line, drank some more water, chocolate milk and coconut water

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Be more fueled for the race and be there earlier for a warm up

Event comments:

One of the best venues and organized races I have ever done, if they wouldn't bill it as a 5k run for the sprint, it would be better. Next time I'll come back in better shape (and 10 less pounds) and kick some butt! LOL

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!
