Hello,

Does anyone else have fatigue or cramping issues in their triceps when starting swimming? I stretch my triceps, but i can't swim more than 4 or 5 laps before I need to stop and stretch more. Finally my triceps relax and I can swim.

any thoughts?

Mark

Immediate thought is poor form that's causing you to push down on the water at the beginning of your stroke as opposed to pulling back on the water.  You're pressing and not pulling.

You mentioned you 'just started swimming' - if you are that early in the swim training, they may just still be 'waking up' to that motion.  It may take building some yardage over a month or two for that to go away as they get stronger.  The other poster said it may be poor form, if you have been training for awhile and it's not going away, this could definitely be it and a little coaching analysis could help.

Some days when my body is overly tired my shoulders will be sore and want to not work for a swim session and never loosen up.

Good luck.

even though they relax after awhile you're probabaly relying on them too much and not enough on your core & lats for swimming.

You might try to concentrate on "pulling your elbow" rather than "pushing your hand" (if that makes any sense). From the "catch" part of the stroke, "pulling the elbow" will use lats rather than "pushing the hand" which will be all tricep. Regardless, swimming uses the triceps and if you are new to it, it might take some time for them to wake up.

This happens to me as well, and it's due to improper technique. For me, it's because I am pressing down on the water too much rather than getting a good EVF catch and pull. Good advice above to try and think of leading this action with your elbow rather than your hand, that's something that helps me during practice.

My pecs get fatigued, but I've never noticed my triceps even being the slightest bit tired.

Thanks for the all the great information. I will try and learn to pull from the elbow and not pull from the hands. I am sure that is it.

Thanks
