  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim start was interesting because it was in waves unlike any other IM I've done (except Kentucky which is time trial). All in all I had a good swim. I was about 10 millets slower than what used to be my average but I'm fine with it considering that I didn't train for it. It was a good trade-off, a slower but decent swim time for extra time spent out running the trails.

Transition 1
  • 08m 50s
Comments:

I was surprised to see my transition time, it felt slower.
Bike
  • 6h 16m 9s
  • 112 miles
  • 17.87 mile/hr
Comments:

I was completely amazed at how well I did on the bike considering that my two "long" rides were 38 miles and I think I only had like 300 bike miles for the year. Again, a really good trade-off, less time on the bike meant more time to run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, well, it may have been a bit better had I trained a little more. I would have liked to at least get in a couple 70 mile rides and that might have limited some of my discomfort but I don't know that it would have speed me up any.
Transition 2
  • 10m 40s
Comments:

Again, pretty happy with my transition. It felt longer. Maybe that's because T-2 was hotter than blazes.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 5h 17m 36s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 12m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

I had a good run all in all. I was really worried that my lack of training on the bike would leave me completely hammered for the run but I did pretty well. The thing that slowed me down was my own dumb mistake somewhere around mile 15 when I took a gel and gatorade at the same time. As I was getting ready to do it I thought to myself that I shouldn't do it but I did it any what and soon got sick to my stomach. I probably lost about a minute per mile off my pace but overall I had a much better race than expected so it's pretty hard to complain.
What would you do differently?:

Not taken a gel with Gatorade at mile 15.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Choosing to skip most of my bike and swim training in favor of enjoying myself trail running. However, I still wouldn't change it. I'm just not into swimming and cycling any more. It's time to hang up the Ironman shoes for a while.

Event comments:

Even though I'm not really into the IM scene anymore I 'm really glad I did this one. I still think that IM Coeur d'Alene is my favorite but maybe not. This one was pretty great. I liked the single loop format of the bike and the swim but the bike course did get pretty freakin boring at times.

Often it makes sense to race slower in order to finish faster and at the same time have a more enjoyable Ironman Triathlon experience.

During the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles, so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. What should I do?

It was literally seconds after I started swimming that I felt the tightness in my chest. I couldn’t get a deep breath in due to the tightness of my wetsuit. I was being strangled by my wetsuit...

The Boulder Peak bike course is legendary. It is, literally and named as such, one of the toughest bike legs in the country.
