Comments:

Good first lap but a bit gassed on the second. Shoulders were killing me.

Comments:

Not bad. Went no socks.
Bike
  • 49m 49s

Comments:

Cooked the bike a bit I think as I was getting queasy by the end. Tough passing with the singletrack and I definitely lost time here. Laid it down on one corner but all in all not bad.
Transition 2
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

Fairly quick all things considered.
What would you do differently?:

I think the IM Perform drink is out.
Run

Comments:

Definitely felt flat starting out but tried to work the downhill portion of the course. Really started to feel it coming back the last two miles. Not a great run. The last 100 yards or so had us wading through the lake along the shore, which was honestly stupid and pointless. I could have caught one more guy but we were all reduced to the same slog through it.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Zero off road training this summer. This was a race I registered for last year that was cancelled because of flooding and I had a free entry for this year. No expectations going into it and I was happy with my performance.

Event comments:

It's a fun race and well done. It even attracted a few pros, who won overall. Again, I thought the last 100 yard wade through the water was silly; this was a triathlon not an adventure race. Also, I would have liked a few more choices for post race nutrition. I cannot put a plate of pancakes and sausages in my stomach after racing hard. I had to send my wife to the local gas station for water and chocolate milk.

Congrats on the AG podium!!  9th OA is nothing to sneeze at either, especially given getting gassed on the swim, overcooking it on the bike and having to do a stoopid water slog.  Great job.  Think you'll do it again?

The XTERRA off-road triathlons consist of a lake swim, a mountain bike trail ride, and a trail run. I decided to try the AZ Xtreme Desert XTERRA Tri as my 1st off-road triathlon, and my 3rd tri ever.
