As we're on the mood of records with the "Fastest bike speed" thread, what's the lowest water temp you swam in (with or without a westuit, please specify...) ?

Last weekend I had a 25min swim w/o westuit in a 63F pond. Not that cold but at the end, I was shivering and it lasted for about 15 minutes (until I ate enough to produce some heat...).

Christian.

The pool where I swim had its heater go out about a month ago, I have kept swimming in it, the last time I checked the temp it was 72, don't really want to know how cold it is getting. Lets just say I get in, do the work, and get out asap.

56. Ralph's half Iron in March in San Diego. They actually offered a shorter swim for those who didn't want to swim the full distance. I swam the full distance. A shriveling experience.

53, with sleeveless wetsuit -- cold but not horrible, and I drove home afterward w/o putting on a jacket. Did it twice, two practice swims (an hour and a half), but then they had to cancel the race-day swim b/c of surf! Now the PacOcean is high 60s and we're swimming w/o wetsuits.

55 with a wetsuit..practice ows for Mooseman. Last year it was 57 or 58 on race day this year it was warm and about 64 or 65.

Getting in the water in a wetsuit when it is 55 takes a bit, but once you start swimming it is okay....a neoprene hat and booties help.

55F, no wetsuit. Early June in Canada just across the border from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. We were jumping into a sweet double waterfall. You'd jump in where they come together and be held under for quite a while getting turned and tossed until your lifejacket managed to pop you to the surface. Talk about disorienting. And C-C-C-C-COLD!!! But I'd do it again in a second.

Its not really swimming but I did jump into a hole cut in a frozen lake after getting nice and sweaty in a sauna.  You can hear your pores slamming shut!

Brrrr... and that's my HIM goal for next year.  I'm cold already thinking about it.

We went to support a friend who raced it two years ago, and saw them pull a guy from the race in T1 because a) he missed the swim cut off; and b) he was shivering uncontrollably.  The guy was super p!ssed and wanted to finish the race.  They were like, "Dude, you can't control yourself to get on you bike!"

The coldest I've swam in was 52. We went to Lake San Antonio in Feb last year for a training weekend for Wildflower.  I guess you can call what I did "swimming" although it was more like torture.  That was just plain awful.

And to think, there are people who do the Treasure Island race sans wetsuit!  The SF is generally around 54 degrees, regardless of season.

Snow baths are very cool also ! The only thing is that you've got to heat you body core first... I once was in a camp in the woods and we were able to heat the camp at 117 Faranheit... The dip in the snow was just soothing ! It was very cool....

I used to do alot of wetsuitless OW swimming races when I lived in CA. The coldest was 55 degrees for 10K.

I've been surfing lots of times (with a wetsuit) with water temps in the 40s and air temps in the 30s.

52 degree water for the swim in Rigby, Idaho in May. I wore a full sleeve wetsuit. The kicker was that the race temperature was 50 degrees and it was raining. Talk about cold feet.

I used to swim in 51-55 degree water with no wetsuit when I was kid on the outer cape all the time.  Took you about 20 minutes to get in then you comeout BLUE!!! But oh so much FUN!!!  Did a tri n CA last summer and I think I was the only participant without a wetsuit...wasn't exactly a planned race.  It was probably in the low 60s....COLD

38 degrees Fahrenheit. 50 yards. Just boxers. I thought the p-valve in my drysuit had a "hull breach" and wanted to rinse off Felt OK after the shock of jumping in and figured I'd hang out for a minute. Actually swimming, about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Wetsuit. 500 yards.

I logged on to ask a question about water temp and here is one already listed! That's what I love about this website. I'm doing a sprint tri this weekend in Ludington, Michigan and swimming in Lake Michigan. I got scared because the sopnsoring tri group said the water temp is hovering around 62-64! I was only going to wear my short wetsuit. My long one is VERY thick (I'm sure it's not one of the best) and I feel like I need three people to get it off of me! I've never done a tri in temps under 70, so I'm freaking out. Any suggestions?

My lowest is about 62 (no wetsuit) and 52 (with wetsuit). A friend of mine has done a 30 min swim in 48 degree water with 52 degree air temp...NO wetsuit. She calls it the hundred -I call it crazy.

69* sans suit but I double capped it. It would have been ~61* if it wasn't for the heat wave a few days before.

Does anyone know what's the white stuff that long distance swimmers put on their body ? I saw it on Discovery (shooting of a guy who swam accros a bay (like 50km) in Ireland or Scotland...). I also noticed that the guy who won the "Traversée du Lac St-Jean" in Québec (32k swim/wetsuit prohibited) had that stuff all over his body...

Thanks !

Christian.

Lake Superior. Surface temp was 65, but the layers of water below that were colder. No wetsuit.

You get used to it, seriously.

I'd say about 37 F. It was glacial melt water on the south island of New Zealand. It was a bad idea. We thought it would be a good story to go swimming naked. It wasn't the best idea ever.

Lanolin. It's supposed to provide a little tine bit of insulation, and also prevents chafing. Probably works better for tha latter than the former.

48 F, full wetsuit, hood, in an unheated pool that was mostly filled with rain water after a cold spell. 20 min. never again, if i can help it.

i'd like to see how it feels to dip into 37 deg water, though. but only for a few seconds.
