Subject: Something is going on...What?
Hello, everybody...It's been a while since I've posted, but I've run into something that is confusing me and I'm hoping someone can offer some insight.

Back in November I did IMAZ...Training went well and I had the race I wanted. I took about 2 weeks off after and hopped right back into it for Ironman New Zealand coming up on March 7th. I'm following the same plan as I did before, but something isn't going right.

My "long swim" averages have dropped from about 1:49/100y to about 1:55/100y
My ride averages have dropped from high 19's MPH to low 18's MPH
And my "tempo" runs have gone from about 7:25 min/mile to about 7:50 min/mile, while my long run averages have went from 8:45's to about 9:00

Nothing has changed, I still feel as strong as I did before IMAZ (In fact stronger on my long days) and my diet has actually improved.

Am I'm still hungover from IMAZ? Burnt out? Under rested?

After tough, windy conditions at IMAZ and me not thinking I had a chance to break 12 hours, I jogged my way to a 12:00:00...I was really hoping to see an "11" at the beginning of my IMNZ time.

Help??

"Paces down" and "feeling stronger" are hard to reconcile.  If you feel stronger, try to push harder.  My guess is you are not as "strong" as you think and will not be able to push the paces faster without having to dig deeper.  As to what may be causing it is much harder to say.  Might never have recovered from IMAZ.  Might not be enough variability in your training.  Could be other stress in your life.  Health issue.  Etc.

Agree.

Swimming paces seem to be the first things to really lag when I am tired or not recovered enough.

I suspect that you aren't/weren't as recovered from AZ as you thought.

I started training really soon after my 2013 IM and then basically struggled all winter and really didn't have the 2014 season I wanted. I can't be sure what held me back but there is a big part of me that thinks I just did not rest and recover enough, both after the IM and throughout the season.

Of course, I could be wrong.

Agree with the above. Are you really recovered?

Don't end up like me

Although I do not do the longer distances you compete and train at; there is something to be said for fatigue on many levels. A person in excellent shape can still train at a significant level, yet still have adrenal fatigue that hampers recovery and performance slightly. I won't attempt to advise in the way of training *(I'm sure you know best)- but I'm not sure if you have ever used Ashwaghanda, Astragalus and/or Holy Basil (Tulsi). All have significant benefits for adrenal recovery, recuperation, cortisol maitenance and immune health. Thought I'd suggest some different options to consider.

My hunger stays under control well enough throughout the day eating every couple hours but come 9:00 pm I am again craving something sweet and if I don't eat I don't sleep.

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.
