Total Time = 3h 01m 59s
Overall Rank = 487/644
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 76/86
Pre-race routine:

Setup went fine, got to go potty and ate a banana...
Event warmup:

Nothing, my RA came back the night before and my left shoulder was sore and not very mobile so I didn't warm up at all.
Swim
  • 32m 16s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 09s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was tough, my shoulder couldn't hack more than 400-500 meters. I limped the whole way after if finally tired out and the arthritis pain was too acute to handle at a high pace. It seemed like an eternity before I made the last turn for the finish platform.
What would you do differently?:

Just bad luck that my RA decided to pop up all of a sudden and have it hit in my shoulder of all places.
Transition 1
  • 03m 2s
Comments:

Right before the National Anthem, the wind changed directions almost 180 degrees and there was a front that moved throught the race site. Temps dropped about 15 degrees instantly and fog came in. By the time I got into T1, I knew that being wet in those temps would not be good for the core body temp. I went into my transition bag and dug out the long sleeved shirt I arrived in and turned it back right side out and struggled to put it on which was hard since I was wet from the swim.
What would you do differently?:

This was a bad T1 time due to having to put my shirt on. I should or could have researched the weather better and swam with a long sleeved shirt instead of trying to do it while in transition.
Bike
  • 1h 31m 3s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 16.38 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

Train!
Transition 2
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

Handled getting off the bike well but poked through the rest. I had to take off my shirt and all the rest of T2 stuff but my hands were stiff from the cold air hitting my hands and arms. No choice but to fumble through everything.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 53m 17s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 35s  min/mile
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Total lack of any training at all

Tough bike! You know how they always say "don't try anything new on race day".... Well, I haven't ridden my bike all year so far actually, riding my bike on race day was definitely a mistake. I wasn't ready for the wind at all! I struggled with it on the portions of the course that went uphill and it slowed me down quite a bit.

My HR was pretty much pegged at 148. I didn't have the fitness to push the pace and I also couldn't push the pace because my legs were ready to start cramping and I've been through enough races that I knew to keep the pace down or I'd truly blow up.
Course: Out & back through the neighborhood.

I don't really strength train (because I never have and don't really know much about it) and feel like my lack of upper body strength is the reason why I'm not getting faster.
