Pre-race routine:

Up at 6am . Ate multigrain English muffin with pnut butter and a banana. Drank 8 oz of water.
Event warmup:

Got to Monroe park around 7:15am and stretched. Turned in my bag with my sweatshirt and winter gloves and car keys. Accidentally left my clif bar in the bag. Drank another 16 ounces of water. Went into the Catholic Church for the service and to keep warm. The wind was brutal. At 745 I headed to the start line to find the team RWB. They were easy to find because of the team shirts and USA flags. We did an interview with ch8 and took a group photo then it was time to find my wave and stretch. Took a pota-potty break and joined my wave.

Comments:

Good splits for the first 2 mile but not something I thought I could keep up. The music helped at times to give a cadence. Side cramps started just after 2 mile because I had not trained for that pace. I tried to control my breathing and relax and the seemed to help. Took off my watch cap and mittens right after the 5K mark. Pace stared to slow at times when the side cramps returned until mile 5 when one of the TEAM RWB guys caught up to me and told me we were running in together. Since he was carrying a flag we got lots of encouragement and that helped me sustain a slightly faster pace. I end up with a second hald split that was faster than the first half.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Although not a PR I did as well as my last 10k in 2013. Since I was recovering from a broken foot and training conditions have been bad this winter I am pretty happy with it. My best 10k training run was over 52 minutes and none of my 5K tempo runs has any splits under 8 min/mile.
Post race
Warm down:

Worn out but happy I got some food and powerade and wandered around looking for friends who were running.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Broken foot recovery and poor training conditions.

Event comments:

Great race. Run into lots of friends and it is so well orchestrated.

48:30 is not a PR?  Darn, you are super fast!!  Great job!

The winter weather has messed up a lot of our training!!
