Williamsburg, Virginia
United States
84F / 29C
Total Time = 5h 10m 47s
Overall Rank = 44/304
Age Group = M 40-44
Age Group Rank = 7/39
Pre-race routine:

Woke up and packed up care before heading to T2. Then over to T1 and ready for the swim
Event warmup:

  • 35m 40s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards

Realized at one point my mind was wondering and had to get back into the zone. Otherwise was a good swim. Rounded buoys well. Very little contact. Started on inside about 3 deep.
Transition 1
  • 03m 4s

Pretty good transition. The run up is long. New shoes were pretty easy to get on. Had to throw everything into T1 bag for transport before I could head off.
What would you do differently?:

  • 2h 41m 30s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.80 mile/hr

Felt like a headwind most of the way going out. This course is Easier in the first 25 miles, then harder in the last 30. Rode the hills pretty well. Had 1 hill that I was in the wrong gear and just couldn't fix it, so ended up climbing standing most of the time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Improvement from last year.
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s

Good transition overall
What would you do differently?:

  • 1h 49m 11s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 20s  min/mile

by the time I started the run, the heat index was 102. Thankfully I'd been keeping up with nutrition all day and felt pretty good. 1st and 2nd loops went pretty well. Was passing lots of people. During the 3rd loop I started feeling it and the pace slowed, but I tried to keep my pace strong. Started walking aid stations and wasn't able to take my last gel at mile 9. Finished strong on the last loop
What would you do differently?:

Post race
Warm down:

Nothing. Found shade and drinks. Cold towels were amazing.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Is it realistic to race a sprint and Olympic distance race within 2-3 weeks of one another to gauge my progress before tackling the half Ironman?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

It’s a challenge to push yourself a little harder and a little further. Be proud of every workout that is accomplished and every step-even the baby ones-that you take on this course to the finishline.

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
