Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4 a.m, ate a bowl of oatmeal. Left the house at 5:15. Had to park and then take a trolley/shuttle from the parking lot (which was at the finish line) to the start.
Event warmup:

Checked bike to make sure it was in the right gear, swam a little bit.

Felt like this was a good swim. I actually came out of the water at 34 minutes but it's a long hike to transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing other than swim faster

Tried out a new wetsuit (well, new for me) and it would not come unzipped. Had a minor panic but managed to yank things free

Found that all of my stuff was covered with tiny baby crickets!! Shook out my running shoes and visor and race bib. Learned later that others experienced the same issue.

First half went well -- seemed like the sun popped out and my heart rate skyrocketed right around mile 3, at which point I pretty much blew up and had to start walking.
What would you do differently?:

More running in the burning sun would probably help

Course: Nice course on country roads. Part of the course went back on what was basically a one lane gravel road. Then you got to run through New Salem - a pioneer village with log cabins and people dressed in period attire. The shade was nice!

You really killed the swim & bike....maybe that combined with the heat cooked the run?  Great job!!
