Curious what the norm is for this issue, and the pros/cons of each choice.

Discuss

Thanks,

Are you swimming by yourself or in a mass start?

In a mass start, put the goggle strap under the swim cap. If they get knocked off your face, the cap will keep them on your head.

Swimming solo, put them on over the cap. It'll be easier to adjust them if needed.

It depends on where you plan to start in the race. Middle or back of the pack then you may be in harms way. (A swift kick to the eye!)

If your a good enought swimmer and can get out in the front of your wave then don't worry about it. You don't have to win your wave but just be in the front of the group. I prefer to wear mine on the outside of my cap. Helps keep the cap down tight to your head. Personal choice....No one way is better than the other.

Under. Two reasons:

(1) Already stated.

(2) When you take the goggles off at the end of the swim, they'll peel the swim cap off easily. No more pulled hair or struggling with pulling the cap off.

great. thanks for the clarification.

in pool swims, i would be in the top 1/3rd or so of swimmers, but i've never done a mass-start OWS, so I'm very nervous, and trying to take control of what I can.

I want to give it my all, not hang back and "see how it goes" because I want to win the race, but I also know that the swim just gets me warmed up for the bike  and run, so all I REALLY need to do is survive it.

but i'll practice in the pool with goggles under the cap a couple times. maybe i can get some people to punch me in the face a few times just to make the experience more real!

thanks all,

~B

Under, as stated. However, I'm surprised at how many people actually DO NOT do this. At my last tri I made it a point to look around (5th wave, so time to kill!) and saw I think one other person with their goggles under their cap!

I am a FOP swimmer and I put them over.  I find under to simply be uncomfortable, and my goggles tend to leak more when under.  Just get to the front, no one messes with you much there

I also have two goggle "fits."  For pool swims, they are fairly loose.  For OW/mass start swims, I tighten them up.

I'm only a couple of hours away, and since I'm usually a little slower than you, I'd be the perfect obstacle.
