Lakeside Triathlon
85F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 12m 17s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 6/6
Pre-race routine:

Breakfast at hotel (2 hard boiled eggs and a bagel with peanut butter plus two cups of coffee), got to venue at about 6:30 and set up on the end of my rack--sweet spot! Tried to get body marked, but the marker wouldn't write on my skin (I was sweaty). Walked around a while and went to the pre-race meeting. Then got body marked again with a different marker (edit: it is now five days after the race and I still know I was #147 because I have the remains of body marking on both legs still)
Event warmup:

Not too much--really just walking around drinking water. Probably drank too much water
Swim
  • 10m 54s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

Horrible swim!! Ended up doing the tarzan for a while. Then gave up and did back stroke. Couldn't see hands in front of face because the lake was murky as heck. Very cold water. There was a definite panic involved here--lots of tangling with other people and got kicked in the ribs by someone doing breast stroke.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up more. Spent a lot of time trying to acclimate to water temp, but not much warming up
Transition 1
  • 02m 23s
Comments:

Longish run up from the lake to the transition area, but they had swept the parking lot and there was a green fake grass mat to run on, so it was good.

Took some time to wipe off my feet and get my gloves on properly (lesson learned from last race!). Could have been faster, but overall I felt like it was a good pace for me after that bad swim.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 1h 11m 54s
  • 19 miles
  • 15.86 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike was awesome. Course was nice, challenging, but not ridiculous. I had a lot of fun on this course, and was faster than expected.
What would you do differently?:

Eat another gu about 15 miles in--more important for the run than it was for the bike, but need to pay more attention to the nutrition on the bike since I can't eat solid/semi-solid food while running
Transition 2
  • 01m 52s
Run
  • 45m 14s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 14m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Ugh--had cramp in calf for first half mile. Stopped and stretched it out a little, then it was fine. Had to walk some, but not too much. Got attacked by a bird about 0.5 mi from end
What would you do differently?:

Try to get HR down earlier so I could run more
Post race
Warm down:

walked around a little with Mindi, but really just drinking a lot of fluids

Event comments:

Great race. Very well organized. Loved the environment

Yeah Gretchen - nice work!!

Also - what a long bike for a sprint distance...It's the most fun part at least. Better than having a long swim - haha.

My left leg is significantly shorter than my right by 7mm. For the bike I got an extra shim in my cleat, so I'm wondering if orthotics would be called for in my running shoes?

The first time out and 50 meters in my oxygen was in very short supply. I realized that all that running didn't do much for this sport.

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
