Stampede Road Race
12C / 54F
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 25m 12s
Overall Rank = 9/574
Age Group = M40-49
Age Group Rank = 3/82
Pre-race routine:

Rice Krispies/1% milk and a fruit bar - with a gel 10 mins before.

Event warmup:

1K jog around start line.

Run
  • 1h 25m 7s
  • 21.1 kms
  • 04m 02s  min/km
Comments:

I was holding a sub 4 pace for the first half then I started to get gut rot and slowed down a bit. The little pack I was leading got ahead - and I really considered running into the bushes. But I held off, dropped the HR, then felt better and picked it back up.

Last 3 k or so caught almost all of the pack - except 1 guy who was about 7 seconds ahead. Who was in my AG. Who won the sprint tri 2 weeks ago (I was 4th). ARGH. Next year Girourard.

What would you do differently?:

1:25 seemed impossible last year but have done it twice with no real taper - so next year I think more run focus again will be in order.

Post race
Warm down:

PANCAKE BREAKFAST. Yum! Kids and wife showed up and they did the kids race which was fun.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

85km bike on Sat and sprint tri on the Wed.

Event comments:

One of my favorite HM's of the year. I just never make it an A race.

One of the hardest races to ‘pace’ is a half marathon. We know a 5k is pretty much a ‘best effort’ type of race and a marathon is usually run at a long run pace - what about in the middle?

Is it realistic to race a sprint and Olympic distance race within 2-3 weeks of one another to gauge my progress before tackling the half Ironman?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
