Extreme Veteran 400 Colorado | Subject: RE: John Karr off the hook If you ask me, Kerr was pretty dang smart. US prison possibly, or definitely Thai prison? I'd make something up too to get out of the country..... He avoided trouble in Thailand by claiming to be the murderer and has now been cleared of that suspicion, yet here he sits, safely in US borders. Doubtful that the US is gonna send him back to Thailand to face those charges...... |

He won't be on the loose, cause he has charges pending in LA for having kiddie porn onhis computer. Also, he's been getting a ton of free publicity for the book he's getting ready to release. |

Expert 882 Fort Bragg | Subject: RE: John Karr off the hook DNA doesn't take too long to run. It's just a few hours. The hard part is taking the unknwon sample from the crime scene and developing a DNA profile. Since the murder technology found a way to copy DNA (called PCR). Now there's enough to test. The problem that they probably faced here is getting the known sample from Karr. He was in a foreign country where Colorado didn't have jurisdiction to take a sample. They could have taken a consent sample and flown in back to the US. Or they could have asked Thailand to take a sample and send it back. Comet - 2006-08-28 5:21 PM Figures. Elite 2468 Racine, WI | Subject: RE: John Karr off the hook What kills me is I read on Yahoo that the governor of Colorado gave the DA's office heck for spending the money to bring him back unneccesarily (sp). As if any gov't agency hasn't spent money far more frivolously????? I can imagine that asking Thailand to get the sample would be difficult at best. Maintaining the chain of evidence would be a nightmare. |

Veteran 300 Peoria AZ | Subject: RE: John Karr off the hook Screw chain of evidance...get a preliminary sample and if it matches then send him and THEN get a formal/real test done once in the states...if not, just leave him to rot in Thailand. Instead we now have a soon to be rich/porn kiddie/liar running around in our country and we have only ourselves to thank. Not to mention all the sicko's who plan to purchase said book that will make him rich. I say we convict him on something (lying, computer kiddie porn, whatever) and ship him right back. |

Master 2447 White Oak, Texas | Subject: RE: John Karr off the hook I would rather see him rot but at least he is being sent to CA to face child porn charges tho i have little faith that CA will put him away for long we just do not value the safety or the lives of our children very much in our country. That is why child murderers get off so easy. |

Expert 882 Fort Bragg | Subject: RE: John Karr off the hook Child porn is a federal offense. Thus, he should be getting tried by the US Attorney and not the State of California. I don't know what the sentencing guidelines are for him. However, the max was just raised from 15 - 20 years for transmitting child porn through interstate communication. |

Expert 882 Fort Bragg | Subject: RE: John Karr off the hook It's interesting about him being charged with a misdemeanor and in state court. The article says that the child pornography was on his computer. However, it doesn't mention transmission. Thus, if someone has pictures but there isn't an interstate nexus (e.g. transmission through the internet) then there is no federal crime. I also find the date of importance. It's 2001 if I'm not mistaken. I'm not sure how hip the child porn laws were at the time. 10 USC 2252a would definitely qualify if he had that interstate nexus. Steve |
