Total Time = 3h 20m 53s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = Clydesdale 40+
Age Group Rank = 5/5
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30 for waffles and diet coke for breakfast. Bag already packed so just had to through bikes on car and head out.
Event warmup:

I had a horrible swim at my last race to in order to get a little confidence back I did jump in the water for a quick swim before the race. That was the extent of my warmup.
Swim
  • 44m 30s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 58s / 100 meters
Comments:

I swam VERY slowly. This was actually intentional. I had a very bad swim at my last sprint so I just wanted to get through this. I am not a good swimmer but could probably pull 2:15/100 on a better day.
What would you do differently?:

I think I need to start slowly like I did but gradually pick up the pace and back off if I feel like I am getting winded. Need to practice this technique while training.
Transition 1
  • 02m 51s
Comments:

Had a little hiccup coming out of T1. Somehow my wife's race belt (she was racked next to me) ended up attached to my wheel. A volunteer noticed it and offered to put it back by her bike. I told her exactly where it was but somehow the number never ended up back there. Cost me about a minute coming out of T1.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure I am not dragging any extra equipment along.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 20s
  • 24 miles
  • 19.91 mile/hr
Comments:

My average speed was better than any previous race. As I started the second lap I came up on a lot of the sprint racers. This created a very crowded course and probably cost me a little speed.
What would you do differently?:

Still learning how hard I can push myself and have a decent run.
Transition 2
  • 03m
Run
  • 1h 15m
  • 6.2 miles
  • 12m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

Decent run. I can run faster but it was hot out. Carried liquids with me so I could keep up. Stopped at each aid station to pour ice water on my head and refill my bottle.
What would you do differently?:

Could maybe have pushed a little harder but it would not have changed any results.
Post race
Warm down:

Sat in an ice bath for 10 minutes. Checked results.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mostly the heat.

Event comments:

Onurmark puts on a great race. I race all of their events and will continue to do so.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?
