Total Time = 1h 24m 44s
Overall Rank = 31/270
Age Group = M 50-54
Age Group Rank = 4/20
Pre-race routine:

Normal routine: 2 Eggo waffles with butter and syrup, coffee, water and a banana. I also had a Gu about 45 minutes before the swim start.
Event warmup:

Not much as it was rainy! Just some walking and stretching and a dip in the lake with a few strokes and arm circles before the swim.
Swim
  • 10m 20s
  • 750 yards
  • 01m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

Very solid swim for me given not very serious swimming over the summer. Very good sighting for me!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 02m 59s
Comments:

As it was still raining a bit when they closed transition before the swim start, I had my helmet upside down and my sunglasses in a wash cloth underneath. When I put my helmet on, straps would not fit! It took me awhile to figure out the straps were reversed!
What would you do differently?:

Not have my helmet straps messed up!
Bike
  • 44m
  • 15 miles
  • 20.45 mile/hr
Comments:

Wet road plus winds made fast descents a little scary.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

OK T2 after terrible T1
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 26m 20s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 16s  min/km
Comments:

Very little hard running this summer showed itself with slow speed. Need to work in intervals and harder runs while avoiding injury. Limited running post hiking/knee injury and ankle pain.
Post race
Warm down:

Normal

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Slow run as usual plus worse T1 I have ever had!

Event comments:

Lots of beginners. I signed up late so started towards the back of the time trial. I passed 131 people on the bike and was only passed by one guy.

I won one of the 2 Grand Prize raffles - a catered Italian dinner for 10. Yumm!

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Keep in mind that the taper period is as important to your body as all of the long hours you’ve put in the pool, on the bike and on the road. It is meant to help you rest, recover and rejuvenate.

I’m a 240lb man, and I run relatively long distances. How would you recommend training for marathon and IM distances as heavy as I am?
