Pre-race routine:

Went to Madison on Thrusday to Register. On Friday did an Open water swim and test drive Dimond TT bike. Saturday turn in Bike and transititon bags.
Event warmup:

At 6 am, wife and I walked to the Swim start. Streched and put on the wetsuit at about 6:15am. Entered the water at 6:30 am. Swam out to the start about 100yards. Then Tread Water until the start.
Swim
  • 58m 40s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

At 2 mile mark got kick hard in the left ear, stunned me for a second. Someone grabbed my ankle and pull me backwards. Also, a hand hit me in the right goggle. This was one of the most physcial swim never left bodies until the last corner and this was caused because I missed sited the bouys and swam off course. I used bodies more for sighting than bouys since they were all on my left.
What would you do differently?:

I failed to study the swim course very well. Need to besure to verify the color changes of the bouys.
Transition 1
  • 07m 24s
Comments:

Running the helix was strong. My pulse did spike a bit. Came out of the water very dizzy. Had a difficult time standing had a port list. The volunteers didn't get me my bag I had to search for it. The volunteer in the change room was a little helpless at first. Then when I went to get my bike I had grab my own bike as the volunteers were just standing around.

  • 5h 51m 16s
  • 112 miles
  • 19.13 mile/hr
Comments:

rear derailler had trouble shifting. The wind was light in the first 40 mile loop and picked up on the 2nd loop. I was able to average 19.4 at 56mile, but was until to maintain. Didn't stop at the Special Needs.
What would you do differently?:

Nutrition was a problem. I was hungry at mile 70. Should have had food in the special needs bag.
Transition 2
  • 05m 57s
Comments:

Ironman takes bike from you at dismount. So only need to walk to change room. Moving was very had as my body was not ready to run or walk. Getting the bag was better had to step over a racer, but the volunteer had my bag in hand. The volunteer in the change room was good and had laid everything out for me.
T2; 1:57pm; 5:57; 5:57 total, 1:44 moving; 0.16 mile; 0'gain; 1.6 mph avg, 5.4 mph moving, 8.0 max mph; bpm 104-117-139; 4.0TE; 14 calories;
What would you do differently?:

this was a good change.
Run
  • 4h 29m 19s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 10m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Fast split was mile 1 and 2nd fast mile 25. Was running too fast the first 8 miles. Started drinking red bulls at the aid stations. Ate at all aids,
Ironman 26.2 Madison; SW@5 70f clear; 2:03pm; 4:29:27; 26.75 mile; 781' gain; Instinct 3.0.
Distance Split Time Race Time Pace Ranks: Division Gender Overall
26.2 mi 04:29:19 11:32:36 10:16/mi 18 279 315
What would you do differently?:

Bonked at the 8.5 and 16 mile marks. I drank an entire can on Monster at Special Needs which hit me hard at 16 miles and I ended walking about 1mile. Need to have half a monster at t2 and the other half at 13.1. Should also have two advil at T2 and two at Special needs.
Post race
Warm down:

Was greet by volunteers at the finish and escorted to a chair. Medical put ice wraps on my calves. I had three waters while sitting there. Got my Photo then went to the food tent. Had a bad Firehouse Sub; red bull and two Sprites.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My planning on nutrition, weak left calf, over running the first 13 miles

Event comments:

This race is by far my most favorite. The course is beautiful; the volunteers are very helpful; the finish line is electric. It could be so much better with better quality finish food.

Thank you so much for being at Mt Horeb. That is a very important aid station. The climb in Horeb is horrible and the prize at the top of the hill is WONDERFUL. thank you, thank you, thank you for your support and comments.

Thanks Alltom. It was a fast swim and if I had not gone off course could have had 1st place. Roki was giving $100 for age group 1st. So I missed the money. But the common comment about Ironman Tri's a good swim is never as good as a good run. I may have gone too hard on the swim. Because it affected my bike and run.

But it was beautiful day and a venue. It is a great race.

Thanks for the comments!!!

I'm a fairly good climber but don't want to blow up on the run. I'm 60 and have a FTP of 230 watts. Any suggestions?

If you would have told me that I would want to train over ten hours a week for a race that can last up to 17 hours, I would have laughed. But somehow, my ACL injury has refocused my outlook on life.

It makes no sense to train hard for a year to hone that aerobic system only to have all that training undermined by a few anaerobic bursts on race day. So, how do you go about it?

TriLover recently had the opportunity to interview Tim and Nicole. Read what the DeBooms had to say about triathlon, their support for each other and life.
