Vichy, Auvergne

34C / 93F
Sunny
Total Time = 15h 45m 56s
Overall Rank = 1163/1626
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 181/185
Swim
  • 1h 04m 15s
  • 3800 meters
  • 01m 41s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim was declared as wetsuit legal but there is no way it was. Water temperature was at least 27C.

The course was two laps with a short run between. There was a ramp for exit but you had to just jump off a pier to get back in.

I found the swim to be very civilised and I passed people who started 4 waves ahead. I was able to stick with other swimmers so navigating wasn't much of an issue and that was good because I managed to get sunblock on my goggles so I couldn't see anything. We also had the sun in our faces for half the swim.

Overall it was a slow swim with the quickest time being 51m. My time of 1h 4m was atrocious for me and shows my severe lack of fitness going into this event.
What would you do differently?:

I need to train more.
Transition 1
  • 18m 54s
Comments:

My T1 was six minutes faster than in my first Ironman but still very slow. There was a long run to transition and a very long run to the bike and then another long run to get to the mount line though.
What would you do differently?:

I simply need to take less time.
Bike
  • 8h 12m 58s
  • 180 kms
  • 21.91 km/hr
Comments:

A brilliant bike course partly spoilt by some very poor roads. In addition to the rough the wind was strong and my average speed suffered as a result. My time was 1h 2m slower than at my first Ironman but Busselton is a flat and relatively easy course.
What would you do differently?:

I need to train more.
Transition 2
  • 14m 23s
Comments:

Five minutes faster than my Busselton T2 but still far too slow.
What would you do differently?:

As wtih T1, I simply need to get better at transitions.
Run
  • 5h 55m 26s
  • 42.2 kms
  • 08m 25s  min/km
Comments:

My run was roughly 1h 40m faster than at Busselton but it had nothing to do with training although I did actually do 30Km prior to the event whereas I did no run training for my first.

The improvement is almost solely due to not getting foot sized blisters halfway through.
What would you do differently?:

I need to train more.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

An almost complete lack of training. While I was able to finish 15 minutes under the shorter than normal cut off (16 hours) with a 38 minute PB without training it is not a strategy I would recommend.

Course: A great course around the river in Vichy. The only negative was a section through the park on the East side where there are no lights. I was out late enough to be running in the dark but had a light with me. Overall it would have to rate as one of the best run courses anywhere.

Wow, a 38 minute PB with little training?!  Beast!   Congrats on the improvements you made, too bad the bike course wasn't all it could've been.

During the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles, so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. What should I do?

If a heart patient can do these things, then so can those of you who haven't been split open like a fish and sewn back together.
