Pre-race routine:

I was organized, for once. Kind of scary. Brought the backpack, didn't forget anything, and I was all set up in plenty of time.
Event warmup:

Swam a hundred yards or so; beautiful morning!
Swim
  • 31m 15s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was a nice swim. Good change to actually be able to see around me, and have a few people to follow. I tried drafting a few times, but could never find someone who'd swim either a consistent speed or direction.
Transition 1
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

I left shoes by the water and that helped as it was a gravel parking lot and I have tender wussy feet. Transition went fast and I took time to eat a gel on the way out.
Bike
  • 1h 10m 17s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.21 mile/hr
Comments:

I'm just glad nothing fell off of the Calfee. It was a bare frame Friday night; I assembled it Saturday and raced on it Sunday.

This was kind of a sneaky bike course. Nothing looks very hilly but you realize you must be going up a grade because you're working awfully hard to be going this slow! Only two people passed me, and I followed one of them right into transition. I had no bike computer of any sort, so I tried to keep the cadence up and not kill myself.

What would you do differently?:

Maybe drink less. I drank less in the last couple of Clermont races, on a tougher bike course, and felt better going out for the run.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

Quick transition as I decided to forgo the socks. Probably shoulda worn 'em.

Run
  • 59m 47s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

I think this is my slowest run this year.

Event comments:

I'm a few days late writing a report, as I've been trying to catch up with a crazy work schedule the last couple of days. Better late than never, though! Christine (lucy) has some photos in her album, including one truly hideous one of me looking (and feeling) like roadkill immediately after the race. Enjoy!

The club put on a great race again this year. I love the clear lake, the rural atmosphere and even the potholes in the base roads. I had a pretty decent race considering the heat, and I'm sure I'll be back next year.

Some random observations, highlights, and lowlights..

It was great again to meet more BTers, and it was great of Renee and Christine to come and have dinner the night before the race with me and my family. You guys are fun, even if Renee dashes off on random side roads while biking and Christine accuses me of lying about the absence of hills. :)

Jeff, Tonya, Matt..great races one and all on a very hot day!

Peter and Mike, if you read this, you guys have been good training partners when we can work out our schedules. I hope we can continue to do more and I'm looking forward to 6 Gap!

To the dude who passed me in the no-passing zone on the bike course, I hope the marshal catches you next year.

I felt like I left it on the course this time..I had to stagger under the sprinkler tent and then sit down before I fell down. Of course, this is when Renee took her "left for dead" photo that Christine mercilessly put in her album. :)

The BBQ afterwards was good and messy. Renee is a goddess for bringing beer and giving me some.

Enough for now; hope to see more BTers at this race next year. We'll have to do a bit more planning and have a group meet-up for dinner and/or drinks.

Hey, your swim time is pretty damn fast, too.

Great job on the bike, letting only 2 people passed.  On the Cranberry course, every racer overtoook me, even though there were traffic signs saying "do not pass".  :p

Nice photos of you.  Looks like you've lost tons of weight.

I am a cheeky monkey! Next time, I'll bring more beer. Who knew Christine was such a lush? :D Was really great to meet you again, Kendall. Your little girl is beautiful and sooo polite and well-mannered! Thank god your wife won't/doesn't tri because she would kick ALL our patooties! Really nice family you've got there, Kendall.

How is 21+ mph SLOW on the bike?!?! Congratulations on a great triathlon! See ya next year, somewhere!

So...if I had swam faster and rode the bike faster, I might have had a chance at finishing with you.

I had a great time.  I can't wait for next year.

Nice race!

I think at this point I am down about 50 pounds from 2 years ago. I am starting to get that "Are you terminally ill?" stare from people I haven't seen in a while. I have to reassure them that I'm not on chemo, I'm just in the best shape of my life.

I just read this aloud to Kira and my older daughter Alana gave a loud hoot of laughter. We're glad she was polite long enough to get through dinner. Jenn would only do triathlons if it were a contact sport..wait, maybe she could swim in relays..

As far as the bike time, I got to the bike shop tonight for our ride, and they all asked how my bike split was..I said "1:10" and they all went, "Oh"..in that "Man he's still slow" tone of voice. These are guys who can do sub 1 hour for a 40k TT; the shop owner Kent did something like 52:xx and got 3rd at the state championships. I have a long way to go!

Well, maybe if you were from Tampa...

Mike, I'm too lazy to go back once more and quote your reply. You'll be faster next year, and with your running, probably kick my butt.

I definitely need to get my bike speed up to what you call your "slow" level.  I'd kill for 21mph average speed on that course.  Awesome race man, great to meet you and thanks for the advice!!
