Your FIRST challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to score at least 20 triathlon specific workout DAYS out of the 30 possible in November.

Workouts must be in the disciplines of swim, bike, and run/walk. Strength training is optional and may be scored as a workout. Sports days (like my kayaking) DO NOT count.

No more than 10 workout days may be in any one discipline. Bricks are excluded from this limit.

You must score at least one workout in each discipline per week.

You cannot have more than 2 rest days in any one week.

Please note, we are counting DAYS not workouts. So if you do two workouts in one day, it still only counts as ONE DAY. The idea behind this challenge is to build consistency.

The SECOND half of the challenge is to take your distance totals for each discipline last month (October) and increase them by at least 10%. For instance, I biked only 30.5 miles in September, so I am going to aim for at least 35 miles for October.

2/20 - Walk - 1h 18m 25s - 4.54 miles - 17m 16s /Mi

The new shoes arrived today, New Balance 1260's. The ball is definitely wider than the Saucony's. Took the laces out, re-laced them, and then tightened them around my foot as it was weighted on the stairs. I was pretty sure that I was trudging, not really getting a very good pace, but the final numbers re-affirm that I am always judging myself too harshly. After not walking in over three weeks and only two walks in the entire month of October I am satisfied with this time. Especially since I just walked in blue jeans and regular socks. No blisters yet, but a little sore where they were last time. I think the next investment is a couple of pair of quality cushioned running socks. And yes, my EIA has kicked in.

I know everyone says get fitted at a professional running shop, but I would have to drive four hours to Phillie just to find a store big enough to carry ANY selection in my size. You know the old joke about "throw the shoes away and just wear the boxes"? Well, when you wear a 13 4E you are really lucky to find a shop that has even ONE pair of shoes in your size, much less several pair to try to find that just right fit. So for now it is online trial and error.

3/20 - Swim - 21m 27s - 1000.00 yards - 02m 09s /100 yards
Fitness Test, kind of. 10x100 on 30s rest.

Folks tell me I swim fast, but I don't agree. Which led me to today's workout. I don't exactly have a training plan yet, I'm just kind of winging it. I did a bike and a walk already this week, so today was supposed to be a swim. I decided to test myself to see what my real time is per 100 yds. I wasn't burning up the water, but I was pushing hard enough to huff-n-puff. It didn't hurt that the fella in the next lane was swimming laps with kick fins on. I was able to stay ahead of him, I'd be darned if I was going to get passed. I suppose a 2:09 baseline is respectable, but that has GOT to be under 1:45 before the season to satisfy me.

20 days and it's IMAZ race month. I'm gonna jump in and see how far I can get (or how much, hehe) before I go into hibernation after race day.

I'm tapering down wisely and I'm at 2/20

I had an awesome swim Sunday morning and a nice afternoon run that day as well. Lazy day rest day yesterday and had an hour bike trainer workout this morning. The weather was nice and cool tonight and got in a 45 minute run after work. I'm feeling great!

Staying ahead of a swimmer with fins on means you totally pwned him!

Dude, I think we can cut you some slack on the month if you complete IMAZ. Heck, that one race will be more than my monthly total. No wonder you have been crushing it these last two months. I'll be looking forward to your race report.

With fins on, I will never be that fast. Only with a motor would I be 1:45. Go Aquaman!

4/23 - Walk - 43m 12s - 2.50 miles - 17m 16s /Mi

JSHS, as a Sub I have nothing to prepare for so I walked during my prep period. Scored 2.5 miles in 43:12 between bells. That's faster than usual. Sweaty and satisfied, I returned to face my last two periods of the day. Of course, they are also the best two classes of the day, in this particular classroom.

Straight from the school to the gym. Nice little ride on the ExpressoCycle. Wanted to do a second course but there was a line of people waiting and I had to surrender the bike.

I'm curious about the 'don't increase your run by more than 10% per week' rule. Is there a minimum mileage under which this doesn't apply?

Executing this full Ironman plan for 17 weeks would give people with one Ironman under their belts very good preparation for a 2nd and 3rd. Preferably, you should have a 6:30 or faster HIM time.

This Intermediate 20 week plan is a quick ramp up in overall volume, but with 20 weeks to train only, it is a gradual and safe approach because of the alternating weeks of the long run/bike.

Yes, the Dual is a little heavier than Cervèlo’s high end counterparts. But…the price is within reach of the masses and it still incorporates all of the design features that make a Cervèlo special.
