Age Group Rank = 110/195
Pre-race routine:

Packet pickup and pre-race sushi dinner.
Event warmup:

It was a brisk 37 deg as the sun tried to peek over the hills before the start of the race. This year the starting line moved from a shopping center parking lot to a hotel across the street. The hotel ballroom was open to the runners which was a very appreciated shelter from the cold. I stayed nice and warm in there until about 15 minutes before the start then made my way to the corrals.

Comments:

Last year at this event I broke the 2:00 barrier for the first time. This year I was hoping to do so again however my main goal was 2:05 considering my training mileage has not been as high. From the start I was feeling pretty good as my body got warmed up. The opening hill was a breeze and my legs felt fresh and fast as I let gravity assist me for a fast descent on the first major down hill.

For the majority of the run the course is on a bike/run path that typifies much of San Diego county: highway on one side and either houses or chaparral canyons on the other. At the top of each hill was a view of the ocean and the end of the course. My pace was pretty consistent however my downhill pace slowed a bit as my legs tired. At the half-way point I was just shy of 1:00 so I had to keep my strong pace to finish under 2:00.

The last three miles were mostly flat and I was on target for a 2:00 finish so long as I kept my pace below 10:00/mile. Not wanting to let up I kept my solid pace, pushing strong at the finish for another sub 2:00 half marathon!
What would you do differently?:

Not much, good run!
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched my legs then walked to car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

For my training level this was a spot on performance.

Event comments:

Great race to end the year. Changes to the start location were a big improvement.

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09
