Your FIRST challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to score at least 22 triathlon specific workout DAYS out of the 31 possible in January.

Workouts must be in the disciplines of swim, bike, and run/walk. Strength training is optional and may be scored as a workout. Sports days (like my kayaking) DO NOT count.

No more than 12 workout days may be in any one discipline. Bricks are excluded from this limit.

You must score at least one workout in each discipline per week.

You cannot have more than 2 rest days in any one week.

Please note, we are counting DAYS not workouts. So if you do two workouts in one day, it still only counts as ONE DAY. The idea behind this challenge is to build consistency.

The SECOND half of the challenge is to take your distance totals for each discipline last month and increase them by at least 10%.

Going DNF the last three months I am going to start January a little different. I'm still looking for at least 21 of 31, but I'm easing up om the goals just a little. I'm calculating goals based on two workouts per discipline per week, so eight for the month. Multiply that by a base figure for the minimum I want to achieve for each workout. Here is what I am planning for January.

Swim - 1000 yd minimum - 8000 yds for the month
Bike - 9 mile minimum - 72 miles for the month
Walk - 2 mile minimum - 16 miles for the month

Brrrr! 28ºF with 10-15 mph winds. Started the New Year off right. Did a nice little walk. Have to learn my proper layering.

Subbed at JSHS and had to do Hall Patrol during lunch anyway, so I stayed out there during my prep period and got three miles in. Then rushed my sandwich before the period ended.

How is everyone else doing?

On the bright side, I have been much more faithful to my training plan than I have been to this forum. Sorry about that. I have begun using, and completed the first week of, Dave McGovern's Beginner's Marathon Walking Plan. I strongly encourage anyone who is injury prone while running to consider this alternative.

1/7/2016
4/21 - Walk - 35m 01s - 2.00 miles - 17m 30s /Mi

After school walk, in the rain.

1/8/2016
5/21 - Walk - 35m - 2.00 miles - 17m 30s /Mi

After school walk. I REALLY need to buy a second pair of shoes. I hate walking in wet shoes. My feet were frozen before the turn around point.

1/9/2016
6/21 - Walk - 35m 17s - 2.00 miles - 17m 38s /Mi

Another easy 2 miles, although rather cold. 28ºF. Thankfully there was no wind. Still don't have the cold weather gear sorted out. A pair of poly long-johns under sweatpants seems to work okay for the lower half. But the top half, so far, is either sweat my butt off or uncomfortably chilly.

1/10/2106
7/21 - Walk - 1h 48m 51s - 6.20 miles - 17m 33s /Mi

A miserable walk in misty/drizzly conditions, depending on which moment we were talking about. Left the house in dense fog, turned to mist around the 1 mile mark. Turned to rain later, back to mist, back to drizzle, etc. Lost count of the changes. But the Marathon Walking Plan called for 2 hours today. I decided that 10k was close enough. Next time I'll have to kick it up to that full 2 hours.

1/11/2016 - Rest Day

1/12/2016
8/31 - Walk - 34m 52s - 2.00 miles - 17m 25s /Mi

After school walk. Following the intervals in the plan it was actually only 32 minutes scheduled, but it took 34 to finish the up-and-back 2 miles. I figure walking extra can't hurt anything at this stage.

Yeah, I know, I have to get out to the gym and start including swims again. Have sort of ignored cycling because I wanted to wait until I get the cold weather gear situation sorted out. Would really rather do my walks and bikes out in the open if possible.

9/21 - Swim - 20m 30s - 1000.00 yards - 02m 03s /100 yards
After school swim. Managed to get there before all the "Resolutionists" got off work and jammed everything up. Still over 2m per 100, but can't complain considering that I haven't been in the pool in nearly two months.

I just realized that for whatever reason, on the app, the last comment was from January 11th. I just signed on my PC and I see all the posts since then. I did press the forward button on the app and the later comments showed up. I use the app most of the time. This challenge really helped to get me focused on my training. I would never have gone to the pool, now twice, without it.

I'm curious about the 'don't increase your run by more than 10% per week' rule. Is there a minimum mileage under which this doesn't apply?

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.

How should I go about training for the marathon while also building base in the other two events? Doing this seems like it's causing me to break the 10% rule in running.

It’s a challenge to push yourself a little harder and a little further. Be proud of every workout that is accomplished and every step-even the baby ones-that you take on this course to the finishline.

Yes, the Dual is a little heavier than Cervèlo’s high end counterparts. But…the price is within reach of the masses and it still incorporates all of the design features that make a Cervèlo special.
