Skaneateles Labor Day Race Weekend
60F / 16C
Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 30m 34s
Overall Rank = 106/362
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 5/23
Pre-race routine:

Drove an hour, ate a granola bar and a banana, met a friend, panic about the rain, set up and hope for no rain, wait for portapottie, get rain, wetsuit and 10 minute warm up in the chilly water. Not bad for me.
Swim
  • 15m 28s
  • 800 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was good. I started out aggressivly, but I think that burned me up too fast. The rest of the swim was fine, but I'm certain that I swim faster than that. I also wondered if the course was long. I'm not great at drafting so I would do it, but I didn't do it enough. Once I'd caught the men's wave I had to do alot of dodging as well, making a fast swim a little harder. I also got clocked in the eye pretty good once, in the men's pack.
What would you do differently?:

Still be aggressive, but try to hold back a bit at the beginning so there is some spring left at the end.
Transition 1
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

Everything was as expected. My huge time loss was to a shirt. Because of the rain, wind and cold temps and my knowledge of how poorly I perform when cold I opted to put on a long sleeve dry shirt. While I was glad I did it while biking and running, when I saw that my time was at least a minute off I was kind of pissed at myself.
What would you do differently?:

Suck it up and be cold.
Bike
  • 49m 40s
  • 14 miles
  • 16.91 mile/hr
Comments:

Do you see that, how bad the bike is compared to the swim? Terrible!! When its wet I'm still nervous, I can't turn fast, I'm far more cautious downhill. I never took advantage of the hills here, should have tried to pick up some time there, I got passed by droves of women. Alot of this is confidence on the bike, but even if the conditions had been ideal I would be slower than all these women.
What would you do differently?:

How do I fix this? I know, more time, ride lots. I think my ride lots needs to include ride hard too.
Transition 2
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

Again, lost time to clothes. I also decided to change socks. I suppose i should have just gone sockless on teh bike, but my shoes hurt my feet then. So, my socks were soaked, completely and I changed them to save my feet a bit of grief. I also did not take my feet out of shoes, should have, but the rain stopped me.
What would you do differently?:

Stop the rain?
Run
  • 21m 41s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt great, ran hard, no problems, happy with the long sleeves, passed 6 women, passed by one, was outkicked, by a split second by a 50 year old lady who totally hosed me on the bike, completely shattered me on the bike. That I at least caught her made me feel good.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, except beat the 50 year old.
Post race
Warm down:

CHanged, checked results, went home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Rain

Event comments:

They can't help the rain. And its no the organizers fault that the chips are held on with plastic ties that leave cuts on my ankles.

Sorry about the shot to the eye. Nothing personal...

I had the same experience on the bike. I think I took it too easy due to all the turns and the road conditions. Nice job on the run.
