I have used white arm coolers before in IM distance not so much for the cooling effect but for sun protection. I am very fair skinned and have had some skin CA close calls.

I have been doing mostly olympic thru- Ironman over the last three years and since a podium was not a concern spending the extra minute to get them on was never a concern in T1.

However in sprints I am competitive and have a chance on a great day to podium this weekend and I was thinking of wearing my arm sleeves with my sleeveless wetsuit to save some time in T1.

But I don't recollect seeing anyone ever doing this.

So though triathletes use some fashionably questionable things will I look like a complete "Tool" or do others do this especially in sprints?

Thanks for reading.

A sprint is so short and so early in the morning that I wouldn't bother with them.

Have you ever done a swim, wearing them?

I'd be concerned they wouldn't stay in place.

Good points... I'll just leave them off and deal with it or put them on in T1 quickly if it is going to be really sunny

Before my first 70.3 a teammate suggested that I wear my arm coolers for the swim. He was more experienced than I was so I listened.

HUUUUGE mistake. It was like swimming with sea anchors on my arms. Not good. I don't recommend it at all.

I do hope you have a great race and good luck getting to the podium!

Sounds like you decided not to wear them for the sim, good advice.  The other option rather than putting them on in T1, given the early part of the day, is to put them on in T2 when you're more likely to see sun.  Or more precisely put them on as you run out of T2, shouldn't ad anything to your time.  Grab em and go

Hey I burn easily as well. I have found that for shorter stuff (training or races) I apply water/ sweatproof sunscreen before I get dressed in the morning so I do not miss any spots, then I reapply before the race.

I use the DeSotto cooling wings as a skin protector for long rides, 70.3's and I plan on wearing them for my first full IM this July.

I would not much care about looking like a D-bag (personally) but if you have not worn them in the water, a race is a bad time to find that does not work out. My advice in addition to double app of the sunscreen, put the arm coolers in T1 and if you are worried about it you can pull them on. I know its hella annoying to put them on wet...the things we do for sport.

Enjoy Escape, its really fun!

Put the arm coolers on and then roll them down much like pantyhose or a condom when taking them off. After the swim, just slide it over your wrists and roll them back up.

To the OP: Don't wear them.

Good call. Just use a really good sunblock. As you said you are vying for a podium spot, you'll only be in the sun for an hour or less
