Sunny
Total Time = 2h 37m 18s
Overall Rank = 35/135
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 2/5
Pre-race routine:

Set up transition. Get warm up swim
Swim
  • 30m
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m / 100 meters
Comments:

No sight problems on way out or across but struggled coming back with sun in eyes and so got off course a couple of times
What would you do differently?:

Use goggles with more sun reflective coating
Transition 1
  • 02m 59s
Comments:

Not great and not bad. Struggled getting wet suit off at ankles. Otherwise acceptable.
Bike
  • 1h 08m 40s
  • 25.6 miles
  • 22.37 mile/hr
Comments:

Kept watts in low zone 4 for entire race. Averaged 206 watts. Wanted to get watts closer to 220, so fell short of that goal. 1/2 of bike route had very poor pavement and the course had some hills. Headwind for half of course was stiff, around 11-12 mph, but manageable. Not much of a tailwind.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Course is not good enough to PR on bike. Too many rough spots to navigate around.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Normal transition for me. Nothing great, nothing bad.
Run
  • 54m 25s
  • 6.24 miles
  • 08m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Due to heat, stopped at every aid station and grabbed 2 cups of water, one to dump on head and other to drink. No doubt that number of stops impacted time. Quads were sore from bike and had to use restroom entire run.
What would you do differently?:

Given the heat, decided to go hard on bike knowing run was going to be tough......and it was. Not sure what I could have done differently. Someone suggested putting ice in parts of Tri-suit.
Post race
Warm down:

Used the restroom, grabbed water bottle and Papa Johns pizza slice, met teammates and waited on results and awards

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No doubt, the heat. My guess is it cost me at least 4-5 minutes, mostly with run, but that impacted everyone else too.

Event comments:

The good: great organization and great communications leading up to race. Swag is good, especially finisher medals. The bad: not sure why they had sprint swim first and then Olympics had to wait until all sprints had finished swim. On a hot day, not good for the Olympic athletes who stood in wetsuits for 40 minutes waiting to get in water. Post race awards are poor for age group winners and take too long to get underway.

From couch potato to a tri in 8 weeks. It was the most fun I've had in a long time. The race organizers had it down and there were no problems at all. This was the perfect first tri, in my opinion.

My expectations for the quality of this years’ Triathlon world championship were fulfilled. This was because of the superb location that is like no other along with having the top triathletes present.
