Assuming that getting to a real pool is not an option...

Can one get a decent swim workout by tethering one's waist and basically swimming in place in a backyard pool?

Or is this just a really foolish thought???

Have you tried it before? I bought a swim tether to take on vacation one year. Our rental house had a little splash pool. I would hate swimming if that were my only option. I felt like I was fighting the thing the whole time and my stroke felt very awkward. I could not get a consistent rhythm going because I always felt like it was pulling me backwards. It was a tough workout but did not feel like good swim.

The hotel I stay at most when I travel has a 15 yard-ish pool.  It'll do in a pinch but I wouldn't want to make a training plan out of it.

If that's all you have, don't do flip turns or push much off the wall so that you're actually swimming as much as possible.

I have a 10 yard BYP, I tried the tethering deal and hated it.  Decided that I'll go back and forth without pushoff's when I need to use it for a quick swim.  I won't do any big yardage in it.  195k since 2006!

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.

Good swimming is relaxed swimming. Relaxed swimming depends on practicing the best techniques and the best body position.
