Looking for a little advice. I just completed a 70.3, Saturday. I have another in 7 weeks. I did some 10 mi runs....a 12 & a 14, leading up to this last race. My question is, how to structure my long(ish) runs in the next 5 weeks (I figure I'll basically do a 40-60% reduction in volume in my two week taper.....especially as it pertains to running).

Next race is 9/25.

Thank you.

I haven't done that distance yet so I can't really help. I just wanted to chime in and remind you to recover after your race assuming you didn't train through this one. Hopefully you'll get some better info than what I have to offer you soon :D.

I appreciate the advice!......but, never fear! I am going to take it easy, this week. I'm going to swim a little Wed. and spin on the trainer....just because I think it'll feel better than NOT.

7 weeks is an odd time to try to peek again but you can make it work. For me I'd do this:

8/8: 40-60% volume. No intervals
8/15: 80% volume. Full swim workouts and almost full bike and runs. Short and few intervals if you want to try them
8/23: Match close to peek week before race. Your body and heart should be feeling good with 2 weeks of no hard workouts
8/29: +10% - More volume
8/29: Recover week (Whatever that means for you. For me it means close to previous week for weekday workouts but way short longer runs/bikes)
9/5: Peek week. +10% from 8/29's week. Add in more/longer intervals too
9/12: Taper: 70% volume from last week
9/19: Race week - really short workouts but still hard but short intervals

Obviously do what you want but this is what I would do. After trying 3 week tapers and reading up on how they are too long, I agreed with the readings and am switching to 2 week tapers instead.

Everyone is different, depends on how well you recover. If it were me, I'd probably take it easy this week depending on how I felt and then go back to my highest volume week, repeat each week till 10 days out, then back off. So if you're long is 14, I'd probably back it off to 8 that week before. . . but that also depends on how long it takes you to run 8. 8 miles to one person could be a very long run and it could be an hour or less for another.

So, to sum it up, do what feels right to you and you'll figure out if you botched it when you're done with that next race

I'm definitely taking it easy, this week.

If I start back at 14 mi. for my long run (next week), where do I go from there? I have (in my head) a 5 week block. If I do a 14 mi. run on 8/15.....do I go to 15 on the 22nd? How far on the 29th? This is what I'm looking for. I know some people go up to 17mi. in HIM training (for their long run). My volume won't support that, I'm afraid. a 14 mi. run will be at almost 50% of my weekly volume. If I don't go over 14, I can keep it below that 50% mark. I guess the big question is..........is that the smartest thing I could do?

I want to have a really good training block. I also want to peak for this next race. If it helps, my log is current.

Thanks.

Don't go over 14.  Run 12 the next few weeks as your long run.  Do one 14 mile run again if it helps your confidence, but at least 2-3 weeks out from the next race.

Why not go over 14, I don't get that? 15 is a decent number, that usually adds up to a fairly long run. 17 isn't bad either if you're run volume supports it, but it sounds like yours does not. Again, it really depends on how fast you run too and how well you recover. If it's going to take you over two and a half hours to do 15, then I'd probably call it quits between 2 and 2 1/2. More miles is better. . . you won't know if you're capable of it until you try imo.

I did 15.5 for an open HM a few years ago, about 3 weeks out. I was doing 40 mpw, then. I'm doing less than 30, now.

I don't think it's a bad idea (longer than 14). I just don't think my volume supports it as the best thing I could be doing.

I really appreciate everyone's input.

Takes the OP over 2hrs to do 12mi according to his logs.  Thus, my advice for him.  No need to run much over 2 hours for the most part.

It takes me 2 hrs if I keep my HR at 135 (which was the plan).

My log is current. I ride with my tri group and sometimes run with them. I swim with Masters. I've got a few folks in my tri group who've probably completed 50 IM's who I also take advice from.

Why do you ask?

I just figured my overall volume didn't ideally support pushing a run of that length at any real intensity. That's it.
