Pre-race routine:

COLD.

Tried to get moving as much as possible. Rain all night and morning of, really dampened this race.
Event warmup:

Quick swim out 200yrds and back to loosen up and warm up. Cold temps were hard for the body to wake up.
Swim
  • 42m 16s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m / 100 yards
Comments:

Two days prior, the water was too warm for wetsuits. Didn't bring it. Turns out, the incoming cold front and rain drove it down enough to make it legal. I froze.

The wind had the chop going pretty hard.

Slowest, worst swim ever.
What would you do differently?:

Bring my wetsuit.
Transition 1
  • 02m 36s
Comments:

COLD. Put on arm warmers and socks. Tried to get body heat where possible.

Shivering at the start.
Bike
  • 3h 08m 28s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.83 mile/hr
Comments:

Took 1 bottle of Carbo 333 and 1 water. Finished the 333 and went to gatorade.

Shivering on the bike leg throughout and just couldn't warm up. Tried a gu at mile 20 & 40 but really hard for the stomach to digest.

Felt uncomfortable the whole time
Transition 2
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Switched out gear and moved on. Temperature started warming up toward the end of the bike so now the weather was nice and steamy
Run
  • 2h 42m 24s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 24s  min/mile
Comments:

Lots of hills and on a messed up stomach, I just had no go. Started throwing up midway through.

Everything I took in, the body rejected and became more upset. Kept getting after it and trying, but there was nothing.

As the pace would increase, the HR would follow and shortly afterwards, the stomach contents would too. Miserable.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked through the finish to get a medal and my time. Looked at the timekeeper and immediately started throwing up.

Carried the trash can behind some bushes and continued to throw up for several minutes until a first responder noticed.

They loaded me with a salt pill, coke, and had me sit up. After about 30 minutes I was able to walk.

Body was completely shutting down and I was in a dark spot...

Event comments:

Race director got the nod to Kona for the championships and left shortly after starting the race. Those remaining tried, but seemed chaotic afterwards.

No clue on overall race results. The results were never published on the website post race.

My issue is that I am currently deployed and training outside is proving difficult, especially on the bike. I have found a safe 10km running loop but I am struggling with the bike training.

With stroke improvements I find that when I try and swim long I have lost any speed gains that I had because my stroke count just creeps up and up. I also feel like I'm running out of air.

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.
