Pre-race routine:

Drove up late Friday night. Stayed at the Comfort Suites, and slept for about 2-3 hours. Got up, ate a banana and cereal, and then left for the race about 4:45 a.m.
Event warmup:

None, and this was a problem. There was a really long line at race checkin, so rather than get to transition early, get setup and warm up, I stood in line with all my junk. Was cold and unprepared when I entered the water. This almost caused me to quit, minutes and a few yards into the swim.

Comments:

This was brutal. This was my first OWS race, and it was a bad day for it. Waves were white caps of at least a foot. The swim out was directly into the wind, and I almost quit at least 10 times. On several occasions had there been a rescue boat close, I definetly would have been pulled from the water. It was dark at the start, and visibility was very limited, so I ended up breast stroking a lot, which wore me out, and bothered my knee (torn MCL). This effected the rest of my race, as I was exhausted just getting out of the water. The swim in was a little better with waves and wind at my back. Also started to control panic much better. Actually swam freestyle at least part of the way in. I spoke with a race director after the race and they pulled more than 50 of the 500 swimmer out of the water. So overall, I'm just glad to have finished, but it was rough!
What would you do differently?:

Learn to do OWS. Control panic better. Warm up before start. Swallow less lake water. Get a wet suit that fits. Goggles didn't leak, but fogged up, and I could barely see. Had enough trouble seeing the markers over the waves. Not helped by fogged glasses.
Transition 1
  • 03m 330s
Comments:

I think I was the only rider at this distance on a mountain bike. Overall, once I got by breath, I was pretty happy and comfortable on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Get a lighter bike.

I think I was the only rider at this distance on a mountain bike. Overall, once I got my breath, I was pretty happy and comfortable on the bike. Pretty good ride, considering I was on my mountain bike, the wind was REALLY strong, and the hills were pretty substantial. I was happy the whole time just to have not drowned!!
What would you do differently?:

Train hills. Get a road bike. Otherwise I was pretty happy, again I didn't drown!
Transition 2
  • 02m 50s
Comments:

Had to pee, so I took my time. I was feeling that my time wouldn't be that competitive at this point, so I just sort of took my time and tried to enjoy myself. Glad I stopped to pee, or the run would have been miserable.
What would you do differently?:

Pick up the pace a little more.
Run

Comments:

Hils were tough, and I didn't push real hard. Was just enjoying myself and talking with other runners.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder.
Post race
Warm down:

None, and I'm stiff today!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mental focus. I switched from a race mentality to survival mode about 2 minutes into the race. Glad to have finished, and had a good time, but it wa s more of just an endurance training event than a race for me in my mind after the swim.

Event comments:

Nice scenery, but VERY disorganized. Race started late. Race directors seemed pretty clueless as to what was going on.

Good job on overcoming a lot of obstacles to your day! LG is a tough first Oly because of the course and you did really well. Contrats on your finish and relish in the knowledge that you were tougher than the course on this day!

Yeowza! You did that bike ride on a MOUNTAIN BIKE!???! That's awesome!

Swim was tough. You are correct. I've done 15+ triathlons, and that was the choppiest water I've ever been in.

Good for you for not quitting! Mental toughness! I know it was hard. I was there!

Nice race. I heard that over 50 swimmers either quit or were pulled out by the kayaks due to the rough water.

Good bike...you're gonna kick butt when you convert to a road or tri bike!

Hopefully. this race will be more organized next year.

I'm missing tri season already.
