![]() Run
Comments: It would have been easy to go all out for 1.5 miles, but I held myself back considerably, knowing that I would be going straight from the run to the bike. I did keep the leaders of my wave in sight the whole run, and wasn't in too far behind them. What would you do differently?: I probably didn't need to wear my jacket and ski cap. I got a little bit warm by the end of the run. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: The time seems a bit long, but this was a pretty big area. I did have a little bit of trouble finding my bike, but didn't lose any more than 4-5 seconds overall. I also had a hard time getting the bike out of the narrow exit with several others trying to hit it at the same time. What would you do differently?: Know where my bike is! ![]() Bike
Comments: I don't know where to start here. This ride was a little disappointing to me. I don't know what the reason was, but I felt like I wasn't able to push very hard. Unlike Jordanelle, there was really no outside factor that prevented me from doing as well as I would have liked, but I just wasn't feeling it. I really didn't do much better than last year despite the upgraded bike and extra training time. I feel like I should have been close to 24mph on this course. It may have been the run before bike, but I'm not sure. It could also be that I peaked a little early. What would you do differently?: I wore my jacked on this ride, which I shouldn't have. I was afraid of getting cold, but ended up being too hot. Plus, the jacket kind of negated the aerodynamic properties of my bike. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Overall, this transition was very efficient. I ran in at full speed, quickly racked the bike and ran out. I did strip the jacket and cap here, which I should have done before the race. Still, I managed to pass a couple of people here. What would you do differently?: Most of this transition went pretty well, but I got a little distracted while riding in and messed up my dismount bigtime. I meant to remove the shoes prior to dismounting, but I rounded the last corner and suddenly the bike dismount area was just there. I pretty much just stopped and hesitated for a minute, then slowly got off the bike. I'm sure I didn't lose a whole lot of time, but could have certainly been more efficient. ![]() Run
Comments: My legs felt really good running out of transition, but I felt like I was gasping for breath along the whole run course. It probably doesn't help that I've been sick with a cold for the past week. Still, I did manage to pass a bunch more people, although many of them were from the previous wave, so I wasn't really climbing in the rankings much, if at all. A guy in my AG that I had passed at the end of the bike course passed me pretty early on. I tried to keep up with him, but decided that I was going to have to let him go. Little did I know that he would beat me out for 1st in the AG! In retrospect, I feel like I should have given it all I had to keep up with him. I congratulated him for a great run at the end. Overall, I'm pretty happy with this, even though my goal was to go sub-7 min miles. I did pick up the pace at the end to make up some time, but just not quite enough. What would you do differently?: Breathe! ![]() Post race
Warm down: I had a banana and some water immediately after the race and followed it up with some Ensure a bit later. I walked up the course a bit to watch for friends to finish, then did a light jog for just a couple of minutes. What limited your ability to perform faster: 1. Poor decision to bundle up before the race, which resulted in wearing a jacket on the bike that I shouldn't have worn & overheating. 2. Bike endurance just didn't seem to be there. I was great up until about mile 15, but struggled to hold the pace. I really haven't been on the bike as much in the last 3-4 weeks. 3. I finished the race feeling like I could have given it a little bit more. I should push myself a little harder. Event comments: This is still my favorite tri. The course is great. The transition area/finish line is perfect for spectators. The post-race festivities are the best of any of the events I've done. It's too bad that the weather didn't work out for us this year. I stayed at the usual hotel with the family in Ogden. I woke up at 6:45 and headed down to the restaurant for breakfast. I wanted to make sure that I had a good meal, because the race was scheduled to start at 10:30.
Kenny picked me up at the hotel, and I rode to the venue with him. We noticed on the way up that the swim area wasn't set up with the usual buoys and green carpeting. Reality was setting in that this triathlon wasn't going to happen. It was 38 degrees at this point and threatening to rain. It had snowed during the night right down to the Ogden Valley level in the mountains.
We got to the race area and found heavy traffic. I figured that a LOT of people wouldn't show up because of the weather, but I was wrong. We headed straight for packet pickup and were informed that they were cancelling the swim and changing to a duathlon format. I was kind of relieved based on how cold it was.
I had dressed pretty warm, but it was still pretty cold standing around in the transition area. I met up with Ryan (rd04) and a few neighbors & coworkers.
They started athletes in waves five minutes apart. I was in the second wave. Just prior to the first, I took a 5-6 min jog up the street and back, then did a short stride.
