Pre-race routine:

I stayed at the usual hotel with the family in Ogden. I woke up at 6:45 and headed down to the restaurant for breakfast. I wanted to make sure that I had a good meal, because the race was scheduled to start at 10:30.

Kenny picked me up at the hotel, and I rode to the venue with him. We noticed on the way up that the swim area wasn't set up with the usual buoys and green carpeting. Reality was setting in that this triathlon wasn't going to happen. It was 38 degrees at this point and threatening to rain. It had snowed during the night right down to the Ogden Valley level in the mountains.

We got to the race area and found heavy traffic. I figured that a LOT of people wouldn't show up because of the weather, but I was wrong. We headed straight for packet pickup and were informed that they were cancelling the swim and changing to a duathlon format. I was kind of relieved based on how cold it was.

I had dressed pretty warm, but it was still pretty cold standing around in the transition area. I met up with Ryan (rd04) and a few neighbors & coworkers.
Event warmup:

They started athletes in waves five minutes apart. I was in the second wave. Just prior to the first, I took a 5-6 min jog up the street and back, then did a short stride.
Run
  • 09m 33s
  • 1.6 miles
  • 05m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

It would have been easy to go all out for 1.5 miles, but I held myself back considerably, knowing that I would be going straight from the run to the bike. I did keep the leaders of my wave in sight the whole run, and wasn't in too far behind them.
What would you do differently?:

I probably didn't need to wear my jacket and ski cap. I got a little bit warm by the end of the run.
Transition 1
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

The time seems a bit long, but this was a pretty big area. I did have a little bit of trouble finding my bike, but didn't lose any more than 4-5 seconds overall. I also had a hard time getting the bike out of the narrow exit with several others trying to hit it at the same time.
What would you do differently?:

Know where my bike is!
Bike
  • 50m 17s
  • 18.86 miles
  • 22.50 mile/hr
Comments:

I don't know where to start here. This ride was a little disappointing to me. I don't know what the reason was, but I felt like I wasn't able to push very hard. Unlike Jordanelle, there was really no outside factor that prevented me from doing as well as I would have liked, but I just wasn't feeling it. I really didn't do much better than last year despite the upgraded bike and extra training time. I feel like I should have been close to 24mph on this course. It may have been the run before bike, but I'm not sure. It could also be that I peaked a little early.
What would you do differently?:

I wore my jacked on this ride, which I shouldn't have. I was afraid of getting cold, but ended up being too hot. Plus, the jacket kind of negated the aerodynamic properties of my bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

Overall, this transition was very efficient. I ran in at full speed, quickly racked the bike and ran out. I did strip the jacket and cap here, which I should have done before the race. Still, I managed to pass a couple of people here.
What would you do differently?:

Most of this transition went pretty well, but I got a little distracted while riding in and messed up my dismount bigtime. I meant to remove the shoes prior to dismounting, but I rounded the last corner and suddenly the bike dismount area was just there. I pretty much just stopped and hesitated for a minute, then slowly got off the bike. I'm sure I didn't lose a whole lot of time, but could have certainly been more efficient.
Run
  • 21m 55s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

My legs felt really good running out of transition, but I felt like I was gasping for breath along the whole run course. It probably doesn't help that I've been sick with a cold for the past week. Still, I did manage to pass a bunch more people, although many of them were from the previous wave, so I wasn't really climbing in the rankings much, if at all.

A guy in my AG that I had passed at the end of the bike course passed me pretty early on. I tried to keep up with him, but decided that I was going to have to let him go. Little did I know that he would beat me out for 1st in the AG! In retrospect, I feel like I should have given it all I had to keep up with him. I congratulated him for a great run at the end.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with this, even though my goal was to go sub-7 min miles. I did pick up the pace at the end to make up some time, but just not quite enough.
What would you do differently?:

Breathe!
Post race
Warm down:

I had a banana and some water immediately after the race and followed it up with some Ensure a bit later. I walked up the course a bit to watch for friends to finish, then did a light jog for just a couple of minutes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1. Poor decision to bundle up before the race, which resulted in wearing a jacket on the bike that I shouldn't have worn & overheating.
2. Bike endurance just didn't seem to be there. I was great up until about mile 15, but struggled to hold the pace. I really haven't been on the bike as much in the last 3-4 weeks.
3. I finished the race feeling like I could have given it a little bit more. I should push myself a little harder.

Event comments:

This is still my favorite tri. The course is great. The transition area/finish line is perfect for spectators. The post-race festivities are the best of any of the events I've done. It's too bad that the weather didn't work out for us this year.

Nice job Dave. I had planned to go up until Friday even with the bad weather. But with the new wife, baby, and job all starting this week it was just wasn't a good time. We are still only half-way moved into our place. At least the bad weather doesn't make me feel so bad about it. Though it would have been cool to race in those conditions just for the experience.

Congrats on getting up there and having a pretty good race.

Great Job, I am sure I saw you there, but there is no way I could have picked you out. I am not sure how to post my race like you did, but you can read all about it on the forum, I am the one that starts out  I did My first Tri..all I can do is laugh!! Yep. that was me! Anyways I am planning on trying this one next year, I did a few practice runs up there and loved it. I also am planning on the St. George in May. Have you ever done that one?

I figured that things were just getting a bit crazy with just getting married, job, etc.  I don't blame you for not coming.  I almost didn't end up going up myself.

Where's the new place?  Do you need any help with the move?

If you go to your training logs here on BT, you can select "Races" under your name on the left hand side of the page.  From there, you can select races that you will be participating in, then fill out the reports afterwards.  I really like having the structured race reports to go back to later on.

Congrats on the finish of your race.  I personally think that the full tri would have been easier than the duathlon format, but I certainly respect the decision of the race directors.  I certainly didn't want to get out of the lake in that kind of weather.  I probably would have just stayed in all day!

I haven't done the St. George course, but I hear that it's a well run race.  The course has a pretty solid hill on the bike, and the run went through a pretty sandy area.  So it's probably a bit more difficult than Ogden.  But it's also shorter.  I'm probably going to do that one next year, too.  Just make sure that you sign up early.  I hear that it filled in just a couple of weeks.

Great job Dave... Glad to hear the race went well!  But after reading your log I'm not as sad that I missed it considering the weather... About the same time you were racing, I was leaving a beautiful 75 degree dark Florida seaside- that's right, 75 degrees and the sun hadn't even come up yet- only to come back to what feels like WINTER here... Yikes!

You did really well... there's no way I would have had a chance keeping up with you on either of the runs OR the bike.  I was surprised to hear you say you were disappointed with 22.5 mph on the bike...  Is it all downhill or something?  I guess you're just getting dangerously fast on that bike!   Way to hammer it out!

... next race you get a 10 min. handicap so I can stay ahead!

I can't say I'm totally disappointed by the outcome of the race, but I felt that I would be capable of a 23+ on the bike, and possibly 24.  I was right on track for both of these about 2/3 of the way through, when I just started to run out of steam.  But when I think about it, my actual ride time was probably just over 23, because the chip time includes mount/dismount and a bit of run in and out of transition (about 100 yards out and 20 yards in).  So yeah, I probably could have done a bit better, but I can't complain.

Glad you had a good time in Florida.  I would have much rather been there last weekend!

Oh, and I don't know when the next one will actually be.  We may have to wait until next season.  I think I'm done for this year.  But I may change my mind and do Telos, depending on the family.
