Well, last week's slow up doesn't seem to be going away. I may be pushing to hard, or maybe it's due to the fact that I haven't been set to add running minutes in a little while. I had an overall tough training week; started out the week rather sore and couldn't get into it much.

I managed an easy 30 minute run Tuesday to try to work out the soreness and then Saturday, scrambling to make up too many missed workouts for the week, I ended up running 4 miles in the rain. It turned out pretty nice, there were a few other people on the trail and it kept me cool - overheating is usually a problem for me. I didn't even have my HR monitor or watch with me (kept track of when to walk or run by the track counter on my MP3 player) - so it was a nice low-key run. Anyways, it was faster than last week's 4 miler, so I'm going in some sort of direction.

This week I'm getting back on the wagon and increasing to 21/30 min running (3:30 at a stretch). Good luck to everyone this week!

I think it's important to realize that you cannot get faster on every run or during every week.  If your times are trending down (that's why I recommend keeping all that data in the logs - cause then you can look at the graphs) then you are doing well.

Some days/weeks will be harder than others and you won't run as fast.  Some runs will be harder (hills) and you won't run as fast.  OVER TIME is what is important, not what you do on any specific day.

I've had some great runs in the last two weeks. It's finally starting to "click." It feels GOOD. I wish I could run every day (don't worry - I don't).

I LOVE RUNNING!

I never thought I would feel this way, but it feels so excellent to move my body, even though I am slow.

I'm doing my first 5K this weekend where I'm going to attempt to jog the entire thing without talking a walking break. I've only done 3.1 miles without a walking break twice previously, and both times were on a treadmill, but I hope the excitement of the moment, the bands* and the stadium finish will inspire me to go the entire time without walking and to a new PR. (A new PR would require running faster than 13 mm because I have walked a 40-minute 5K.)


* There are bands because this is a piggy-back event to a half-marathon. As a side note, Olympic track cycling gold medalist Marty Nothstein is scheduled to do the race. Just call him Lance.

Awesome! You're my new hero. Someday I'm going to be able to utter the sentance "I love runnnnnnnn... Okay I can't even type it yet. But I'm excited you can! Make sure to check back and tell us how the 5K goes. Good luck!

Woohoo! How exciting! I can't wait to read your race report after this weekend, I know you can do it! I was just starting to get to a point where I liked running (wouldn't go as far as love yet) when all my shin stuff happened and messed all that up. Now running is back to frustrating the heck outta me!

Anyway, way to go, and I'm so glad to hear it's clicking for you! How long have you been running?

The short answer: I switched from all walking to jogging intervals on Dec. 25.

The long answer:

I quit exercing in September 2005 and didn't do anything again until August 2006. I began a women's walking/running program and walked. I suffered through some really bad shin splints that I assumed were because I was overweight and out of shape. These almost made me quit, but I got a recommendation for a good podiatrist and he said after 30 seconds of looking at my X-ray that my bone structure was causing the problem. He gave me $20 BFO orthotics and my pain was taken away overnight. I later got custom orthotics.

I continued walking, doing intervals with slow walking and then fast walking, and by December I walked a 5K in just over 40 minutes (less than 13 mm).

I finally felt I had lost enough weight that I could safely begin jogging. Beginning on Dec. 25, I used this 12-week program to begin jogging. It took a long time to build up to where I am today, and at times I was really frustrated and wanted to quit. But now that I'm here, it's wonderful.

Woohoo!  I averaged 12:17 per mile for my 2 mile race today....not many miles, but I had no idea I could go that fast at all!

Congrats!!

I think a half mary is daunting for us slow buggers (or this one, anyways) since it's such a time investment. Great to see someone accomplish it!

this slow bugger is almost finished with school so went for her first run is ages today. half a mile round the block: two walk breaks to catch my breath.  it was a bit windy but my main excuse is - i have no running fitness! also i'm trying to run more on the front foot (or whatever its called) which does help me go faster BUT it means it tires me out - argh!!!!

My friend had that and it was called stress fracture.

Are you calf muscles tight? That can be a cause of it.

Though I've been running more than my logs would tell you (tough for them to tell you anything when I haven't been logging like a good girl), I've learned that my best runs often come when I haven't run in awhile. I don't think not running is the answer though, maybe slowing down?

I did have a couple major breakthroughs - I ran my first whole mile. I got to the end of my couch25K, where I though that jumping from 4:30 running at a stretch to 15 was laughable. But I actually kinda did it. I'm currently running 5, walking :10, it's working okay.

Things are going pretty well for me - although I need to get my butt out there more - I've been slacking lately.

Managed to break a 15 minute mile during my first tri - a sprint with a 5 mile run, so I was happy about that.  Although, based on my 1/2 marathon time I should have been able to get closer to 14 minutes. Oh well, at least I am progressing!

lil: you tried aqua jogging? elliptical? may help keep the i ought to be running demons at bay whilst you heal. also - what about your trainers? i had all sorts of problems with sauconys but swapped to mizuno and they helped.

cadreamer: don't forget you'll be slower after the other two events. imho 15 min mile is great and 5 miles is far!!!

pescalita: well done on the break through! you must be chuffed? (chuffed = english for happy, despite what hollis thinks...)

I like the idea of t-shirts....but I would say leave the "10 minute mile my arse" part off.  I think it'd be cooler w/out any mention of time....just to keep people guessing a bit....but I love the idea of going running in a shirt that says slow buggers running club!

I love it! I'd totally wear that shirt! I have mixed feelings about the time though... not sure if I'd feel bad or proud wearing it once I break that mark.

As I posted in the thread, I've seen a lot of talk on here about HR zone training, but for some reason I assumed it was pointless for someone as slow as me (run slower? I'm barely running!). But madkat has some great pointers on how he got faster by slowing down to 17min/mi (even being passed by walkers). It's inspired me!

As for my progress - I've moved past my first tri of the year (where I did really well, but not so great on the run), so now I focus on running looking forward to October's half mary. At this point it seems unimaginable that I'll be able to accomplish that, but I know I'll get there eventually. I'm also working on running off the bike so my run is stronger in Sept.'s tri. 3.5mi this weekend at a decent clip, felt pretty great!

Keep it up slow buggers!

seeing as i ran today i thought i'd see how we are getting on. 0.5miles at 12min 20sec pace - woohoo!!!!!! but i ran! oh and it was barefoot on concrete so not a bad start.
