Congrats on the running. It's good you're getting some consistency back.

41 hours of SBR for the month for me. For my previous Ironman, by biggest training month was 42, so 4 months out, I'm very pleased with how my consistency is going.

About 10 hours 20min for the week just gone,

Saturdays long ride was a bit of a mess, I was tired, it was very windy, getting blown around, towards the building traffic. So I called it done early. 2hr 30m, rather than the 3:30 planned. So I ended up doing a trainer ride Saturday evening to make up some time. Other than that happy with how my week has gone.

S: x 2, 1 pool, 1 OWS, 45min, 2080m
B: x 5, 6hr 6min (should have been x4, see above)
R: x 3, 3hr 33 min.

In other news, on the weekend, I officially entered the 70.3 in Jan I've had penciled in as a build up/test event. With babys timing I'll likely be on my own for this one, but Mrs Bullfrog is pushing for me to do it if at all possible as it's such a good pre Ironman fitness test.

P.S. saph How good were the All Blacks on the weekend? It's a pity we're not going to get the chance to play England or SA this year...

If you're more likely to use the spin bike, then that answers the question for you. Whatever any advantages/disadvantages the various options have the one that gets you on it the most is clearly the winner.


Agreed! I will decide for sure once the basement is done. It may end up being a "how much money do I have left" decision lol.

Congrats on the race, Andrew! And for having such a supportive wife...I love that she didn't let you back out of this race!

We had daylight savings here (I'm not sure who all participates in this?) this weekend so the time change should hopefully help me with my mornings, although losing so much afternoon/evening light is going to be painful. That's when my roommate and I typically get in our walks, and walking in the city when it's dark isn't always the safest, so we will have to figure out a plan. I'm trying to make a wellness committee at work so we can do some wellness competitions and keep people thinking about their mental health. Winter is always a tough time, but I have a feeling this is going to be the toughest year of all.

Nicole—I’m right there with you on DST. I HATE that the sun is down by 5pm now. Of course, I used to like when we adjusted clocks so I was getting sunlight at 6:30, but now that covid has turned me into a late sleeper (get up at 7 now, instead of 5), it doesn’t matter so much. I was talking to a friend who lives in London. It was 3:30pm and she was marveling that it was so light out still, so I guess I really shouldn’t complain!

We swap from British Summer (sic) Time to Greenwich Meridian Time and it sucks! I have swapped my work schedule to start at 8am so I can get as much daylight as possible. I am forcing myself out for lunchtime walks and have just done a five mile ride in the fading light. I use a high lux visor to help, and vitamin d can be of use too (it makes me feel sick so I can't take it). Once December 21st has passed I am all good again.

Busted out my weights too; we are in lockdown again from Thursday so no rugby for a month; back to riding, and core work and arm workouts.

I powered through a 1:05 threshold ride this morning, followed immediately by a 25’ run with strides. I feel so uncoordinated trying to run “fast” after years of Z2 training.

For us up North, it doesn’t matter, it’s too f******g dark in the winter, whatever time, Summer or Winter. November is the worse month because as well as being getting darker, it’s always cloudy, you don’t see the sun un weeks. When (or if...) it gets colder in December, we usually get a few hours of sunshine.

6k run at lunch today, the little pain I felt on various parts of my legs after Sunday’s 11k have all gone. Still considering swapping a run with a swim or a ride, as not to overdo it....

Hour run with two 8’ Z4 intervals today. Felt pretty good until I hit the cool down segment, where I realized why my shorts were being all weird. They had split/worn through at a seam and were flapping about in the back! Today’s run was brought to you by the letter I, for indecent exposure! There is nothing quite like having to run a mile home knowing you’re mooning everyone who passes you from behind.

We're in daylight savings time down here. It doesn't get dark till around 8pm at the moment. From a workout point of view, that doesn't help much as most/all of my outside workouts are in the morning. But it makes evening BBQ's nice

What was supposed to be an hour long VO2 max session got cut short during the warm up by a broken spoke on the back wheel. How does one break a spoke when the bike is on the trainer?!? At first I thought I could finish if I just took the break off, but the Tire was rubbing on the frame, so I ended up cutting the ride short. Guess I’ll be using the time saved to drop it off at the bike shop later. Followed that with a 30’ run.

Broken shorts on your run, followed by broken spokes on the trainer? I think the Triathlon Gods are trying to tell you to go buy more tri gear... you can never have too much

Hope you're bike shop can fix it soon so you're not out of action too long.

We're all going to be living vicariously through you this winter. Not only is it summer for you, but also you're not living in fear of the pandemic. I'm thinking I need to relocate...

Got in a mid-afternoon run yesterday. It's been gorgeous here and yesterday was perfect. Going to need a long walk after work today, before a farewell outdoor gathering for my neighbors who are moving tomorrow.

Nice!

First ride in ages for me, 40 minutes mountainbike in the rainy and grey November weather. Nice to do something else other than running for once. Looks like I won’t be swimming for a while now. I was thinking about going to the pool once a week but with the rise in Corona cases, the new recommendations (we have recommendations here, nothing is forced to close) include avoiding gyms and swimming pools. Just the excuse I needed, not a big fan of doing laps, I much prefer OWS.

40’ run this morning. Felt good.

Nathalie—our pool is open, but we’re having a local surge to go along with our nationwide surge, so limiting as much unnecessary contact with others as possible. We’re kinda doing a mini-isolation prior to thanksgiving (nov 26) in case we visit my parents. Don’t want to risk transmitting it to them!

Random workout day today. 1km run for a rugby challenge we are doing; arm workout after to build my arms again during lockdown (I have decided this is my thing); I then got bored this afternoon so rode to my mate's house, then stayed out in dreary, damp, darkening weather to hit 5 miles before the footie started.

Sole exercise for the rest of the day: shouting at my tv!!!

 

Btw bulfrog: not watched any of the all blacks games yet...sorry!

And we have actual races with big crowds happening. 12,000 at the Auckland marathon last weekend. It's not perfect here by any means. But it's not too bad... and there aren't many other places I'd rather be at the moment.

Good luck getting in tho... unfortunately one of the side effects of our pandemic 'plan' is we are essentially closed for business. :/

Well don't waste your time watching the most recent one. One of the worst refereeing performances you are likely to see in a long time. Full credit to Australia who were far better than last week, but 2 reds and 2 yellows... kind of ruins the game.

Reasonably happy with my week, got most of it done, with a little hiccup on Saturday.

S: x 2, 2050m 47 min (both at the pool this week)
B: x 4, 5hr 27 min
R: x 4, 4 hr 2 min

Total of 10 hours and 16 minutes SBR for the week.

Unfortunately my long ride on Saturday was cut short due to a puncture. I was about 30 minutes short of what I was planning, and got a 3km walk back to the car pushing the single speed. My problem, which I didn't realize until the puncture, is the single speed doesn't have quick release skewers on it. So no way to get the wheel off to change it. Dumb.

Up until that point I had been having a really good ride too. Speed was up on recent times, and I was feeling good.

So, that's 3 weeks in a row of approx 10 hours. Looking forward to a bit of a rest week this week. My legs sure feel like they need it.

Oh Andrew—that’s rough! There is little worse in the biking world, save a crash, than having to walk your bike home (or back to the car). Early in my tri training I had a horrible old bike with shifters on the down tube and absolutely no knowledge of how to ride it, but especially it on hills. One early Saturday morning I went out for a ride and had a slow motion crash trying to start going again after a rest on a big uphill. I tipped over mid road and embedded my handlebar in my left thigh. There was so much blood everywhere. I tried to cal my wife for a pickup for a while, but this was before we had smartphones and she didn’t regularly bring her phone to bed, so she didn’t hear her phone. I finally gave up and decided I’d have to ride home, so I walked myself up that hill and started riding home. About four miles further on, I broke my chain on another uphill and was absolutely done. I walked to the top of the hill and just sat and cursed for a long time between calls to my wife to come get me (still sleeping, still not picking up). After a while, I figured I was only getting home one way, so off I started walking—in bike shoes, covered with blood and sweat, rolling my bike. Needless to say, no one stopped to ask me if I needed a ride.

I got in an hour run today after waking up and realizing I had no clean running gear. Laundry monitoring fail! Ugh...three hour delay to wash clothes. By that time it was 79F—gorgeous day, but warmer than it has been lately.
