Swimming is a pretty good life skill (you really never know when you'll need it) and an important prerequisite for this sport.

I was a lifeguard and swimming instructor in college.  Don't get in the water if you're counting on someone like me to save your life!

If you're not proficient, get some lessons and become proficient.  Swimming is a lot of technique (plus some confidence) and learning proper technique will pay benefits.

Like McFuzz said earlier, lessons can help a lot. Swimming is very dependent on proper technique. A swimmer may feel like they are doing it right but someone experienced who is watching can pick out problems. Without the correct technique, swimming can be a lot of work towards little progress. When I first started, I took a weekly group lesson and used the week in between lessons to work on what the instructor had told me. Even a little proper feedback can make a world of difference.
