Ironman
71F / 22C
Sunny
Total Time = 4h 42m 3s
Overall Rank = 60/1861
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 12/143
Pre-race routine:

First thing to note: Ironman had a major timing issue where almost half the field did not get swim times. I am using my Garmin data here and estimating places based off that.

For pre-race routine, this was a bit unusual. My alarm was making no noise, so instead of getting up at 4:00 for a relaxed breakfast and pack up, I heard a text from Greg at 4:45am that he was outside to pick me up. Panic ensued - luckily I pretty much packed up everything but my food the night before. No time to double check, just grab everything and go. Ate my blueberry pancakes during the ride over. Got to transition on time and everything went smooth from there.
Event warmup:

No warm up, just got my face wet in the water before getting to the corral.
Swim
  • 32m 10s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

After some early jostling, got on some good feet for the most part on the way out. Lost and found some others around the two far turns, before falling in behind someone for most of the home stretch. Overall a solid swim.
What would you do differently?:

I probably had more effort to give, but a solid time and always good to draft.
Transition 1
  • 03m 35s
Comments:

As usual with Ironman, long jog to transition (and unnecessary if the swim course were reversed). But no real wasted time here.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 2h 39m 15s
  • 56 miles
  • 21.10 mile/hr
Comments:

Solid, consistent effort here. Averaged 190 watts with a VI of 1.02 for the ride. No issues staying aero on the new bike. Hit nutrition plan spot on (1 bottle of 3 scoops Tailwind, 2 sleeves of Clif Blocks). Definitely got passed quite a bit, and did not see anyone else without race wheels. But for where I'm at with bike fitness, this was about as good as I could expect.
What would you do differently?:

Get race wheels! In these conditions I likely gave away 3-4 minutes on that alone.
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

Solid
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 1h 25m 16s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 06m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

Wow! This blew away expectations.
What would you do differently?:

Goal was to start out around 7:00 min/mile and go from there. Came out faster than that and felt really comfortable so just went with feel. Miles started ticking in around 6:30/mi and I couldn't believe it, but felt like I could hold it so I did. Absolutely chewed through the field, never once getting passed myself. Took fluids and food as needed and never really had any stomach issues.

With just under 1 mile to go, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a train going by at the crossing I had gone over 3 times up until then. A fairly large group of people were anxiously waiting there, as volunteers shouted that times would be adjusted. Lucky for me I was only held up 30-40 seconds, and once the train passed I shot off the front like a madman. I guessed there was a gap of several minutes and my goal was to be the first one from this pack to reach the finish line. I emptied the tank and got lots of cheers and a finish line all to myself, capping off an awesome run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit, grabbing some food and cold drinks.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No race wheels!

Event comments:

Definitely a bummer that the timing got messed up, but I wasn't in competition for any podium spots so ultimately I'm not very upset. Beautiful course, perfect weather, and I cannot believe my run time here - 3rd fastest half marathon ever, stand alone or otherwise. Gotta be the shoes!
