I blame everyone being so dependant on social media for news, and heading down their own personal rabbit holes feeding you more and more extreme views of whichever way you lean. It's not that many elections ago the thought of post voting violence would be totally unimaginable, now, it's expected. That's a sad state of affairs for everyone. |

Especially adding a little run off the bike. That's the way to sneak some run frequency into your schedule. I don't have strength scheduled in TP, but can you not tell it too look at sets/reps? That'd be a far more accurate way to measure than time I would have thought. #GreenBoxesMatter. @Gretchen, Nice run with Purl. We don't have any deer, but there is a pony club I often run past. Our dog Charlie is the same with the horses, she's very, very excited and wants to go see the 'big dogs'. Until she gets close... then they're terrifying and wants to get away. Haha. @Nicole, Meal Prep + Yoga + PT + down almost 20lbs. Sounds like you're killing it this week. Me. Coaches Mike/Gretchen and Andrew can be happy. I went for a swim this morning. Just a short one as I was a bit slow leaving the house, but nice to be back in the water. Physio last night, he continues to be happy with what I'm doing. I have permission to do some faster running, and up the overall volume a bit. But still wants me to limit to 3 runs/week to keep that recovery time. My exercises are not changing that much, moving to some single leg bridges, adding weight to squats, increasing reps and weight on calf raise. But pretty much keep doing what I'm doing. 3-4 times/week Have a good election day guys. |

Nicole doing great with the weight loss, the meal preps and all that. Well done on finding the pool Andrew! was it full of wet water? as for me, enjoying off season, eating well, doing some kind of BR 5 days a week, wouldn't call it training except on Wednesdays, run intervals with the club. Tonight we're doing something we haven't done since my first training with them almost 3 years ago: Run 30 secs, stay on the same spot for 30s, run 30s, stay, etc. At the end we measure the distance we have run, which makes for amazing tempos. FUN! |

Glad you got some good news from the physio person, even though everything I'm conditioned to says to spread out mileage more evenly through a week if possible. And the pool!! Nice work...Coach Mike approves. As for our election day, certainly not the outcome I would have liked (probably an extreme understatement) but the sun still rises, I gotta go to work, and at least my 401k retirement account is going crazy today. Talking my wife and especially my daughter off the ledge will be a process. Legs day after a run this morning. We have a whole bunch of new people at the gym - it's crazy busy at 5:50 AM when I get there where it used to be like 7-8 of us regulars, now more like 25 or so. |

If nothing else, you now know your goggles haven't dry rotted over the winter. Nat-Is there a prize for the person who travels the shortest distance? Cause...that would be me! Sounds like a fun workout though! Mike--re: election...same dude...although I'm probably closer to your wife and daughter's reactions. Horrified and terrified...yes, life goes on, but now it goes on in an environment where people who I know want to take my rights away are in power. As for me...a quick morning swim with a bunch of really downcast folks. My Master's swim was dismal this morning. I'm actually really glad I don't have to teach today in person. It would be a tough day to be the adult in the room. I taught the day after RBG died and it was intense. The kids...they feel everything so much! 2200yds at Masters and then I came home and did a 30' walk with the dogs and my wife and then a 30' run with just Purl. She is getting much better on the leash while running, but still she almost took me out when she saw a squirrel that I didn't. Marathon training day 3...done! |

The 30/30 workout was, as expected, a lot of fun. In 22.30 minutes of running, I covered 5.3k, which translates to a 4.13 min/km or 6:48/mile pace. The achilles did protest a bit at the end (actually, it’s not really the achilles anymore, it felt more on the side) but nothing serious, all gone now, 2.5 hours later. |

I'm somewhere between Mike and Gretchen (but probably closer to Gretchen...). I was on the verge of tears most of the day. Went in early b/c I had a big meeting I needed to finish prepping for. Got out of my car, and my protein bottle apparently wasn't locked and opened and spilled ALLLLLL down the front of my black dress (vanilla protein today...). Oh and I was having photos taken with my team today, so rather than just taking this as a sign and going home and staying there, I had to go home and change and make my way right back to the office. I lost the fight with my tears in the afternoon when I was talking to one of my directors and we were both easily flustered today and it ended with me sobbing right after hanging up. So fun. But life does go on. It's just the uncertainty of how far backwards we can go in four years that causes immense anxiety. We'll see how this goes... I will say that I am lucky to live and work where I do. I felt very safe having my feelings today. And tried to spread that to my staff. Trying to find the positives. |

Well, at least with a decisive result you, and the rest of the world, are spared 3 months of fighting and allegations of cheating. Its a result, life can move forwards, as mike said, the sun is still almost definitely going to rise tomorrow. I'm sure like all elections what's to come wont be as 'bad' as Trumps opponent's fear, nor will it be as 'good' as what his supporters believe they're going to get. Life will just keep lifeing. For us, from a selfish point of view, the USA is currently NZ's largest export market for red meat (the industry I work in) so not looking forward to potential 20% tarifs, not so good for business. And now, no more election talk. Its done, there's nothing any of us can do to change things. And triathlon is a thing in our lives that brings us joy, so this should remain a happy place, where we can focus on the good parts of life @Nat, it may be stop/start but 4:13/km is absolutely flying. Awesome workout. @Mike, Yeah, I'm with you I have always believed in easy miles, and frequency to build up volume. But, I can understand the thinking about not running back to back days to keep nice long recovery periods. We will see. To be fair, he would prefer me to not increase running at all, so it's a compromise answer. I'm not going to be increasing much, or fast, and will be closely monitoring my symptoms. @Gretchen, Squirrel chasing is good, high intensity sprint training. Purls just trying to help you with your finish chute kick. Me, Not much to report. Another run this morning, Same route as Tuesday, but I did 2x1km in Z3. My first 'fast' running for months. It was fun to push myself for a change, but by the end of each interval I was definitely feeling it. It's going to take some work getting pace back. I don't want to do a fitness test, but after less miles and only slow pace for 12 weeks my pace zones are all probably slower than I think. Doubling down on Z3 today and I'll be doing 70ish minutes on zwift with cruise intervals tonight, before round 1 of my new PT routine. And all going to plan, I'm intending to swim again tomorrow. Twice in one week.... WHAT?? |

Add in another couple of hours to get parts and figure out how to rig up lights (did I mention it sprung the leak at 3?) and I’m pooped! Purl helped dig by digging in my backfill pile and Wilbert peed on my shovel every time I put it down. My wife went to a movie (don’t hate on her—I told her to go. It is best she is not home when I do projects.) |

The "warm up" , (45 minutes struggling not to be left behind ) was the hardest, so I took it kind of easy on the intervals ( 4 x 7 minutes threshold with 3 minutes rest in between). 2 hard workouts in 2 nights, that's a while ago since I'd done that. I don't usually stay up late for games, was hoping it would be a blowout, but had to watch til the end. I'm surprised they went for the 2 point conversion at the end...I guess it makes sense if they can end it, and I'm glad it didn't go into overtime, but don't know how I'd feel if I was a Bengals fan. |

I've felt super productive this week, but am also getting crushed with work. I'd made progress on catching up on some stuff last week, but feel like I've taken 3 steps back this week. Surgery keeps getting closer! 12 days away. Tuesday when a friend was over, I tried on my brace I have to wear after the surgery, which doesn't allow me to hinge at the hip. I tried getting on and off the couch. Oh my gosh, this is going to be interesting. It's hard without having a cut up hip! I was feeling anxious about it, so I texted a friend of a friend who had the surgery a few years ago and asked her how she managed with the brace (specifically, how did she use the bathroom?!). She said she didn't have a brace and was able to bend her hip "no more than 90 degrees" I was like, whatttt?! So that made me feel a little less anxious. Obviously my surgeon has a more conservative protocol, but seems like maybe I will be able to move a little more than they're letting on. I will do whatever my surgeon tells me, but am going to ask A LOT of questions while I'm there. Mostly still walking a good amount. Gonna play some pickleball tonight, we'll see how long I last. It's more of a social/free play thing, so should be fun and I can go easy while still getting some movement in. Happy Friday! I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! |

That recovery sounds a little rough, and it'll be harder with you living alone, and you're also in a row house, too, right? Stairs!! @Gretchen and Andrew: do you use Training Peaks Premium? If you're paying for a coaching plan it usually comes with it. They bought out indievelo last week and have an app that looks almost exactly like Zwift (which is no surprise as one of the original developers) - it's free right now and will be included with the TP premium subscription (which is like $120/year) so you wouldn't have to pay for Zwift. Functionality is similar with loading workouts, etc. I find the ERG mode is better than Zwift, graphics a little more basic if you can believe that, and way more info on the screen when you're riding. There aren't many people on it right now (only about 40K users, which is like 1% of what Zwift reports to have) so you're mostly riding solo out there unless you do an event or join a group. Works for me, though and will save me the $200/year on Zwift. |

Water line break on Wednesday afternoon turned into two breaks (although I'm not 100% convinced I didn't create the second one...oops!). I finally got them fixed around noon on Thursday. It took a bit longer than expected because I made a stupid rookie mistake and forgot to account for the difference in length between dry fit pipe and cemented pipe, so I cut my line about an inch short and had to go back to the store for more parts. Ugh. Anyway, other than that it was a fairly easy repair after getting to the line buried 3' deep. I think the lack of pressure in the lines dislodged some gunk in the lines, because after I got the water turend back on, the toilet in our master bathroom wouldn't fill. That line was clogged. If it ain't one thing, it is another. Simple fix--I ran a pin flag wire through it an unclogged, but decided to just replace that intake line while I had it off. Another trip to the store. I backfilled the hole for about an hour an a half until I could barely move on Thursday afternoon. I was TIRED. Shoveling wet clay mud is not fun. Friday I did little jobs around the house while I waited for it to get warm enough to go outside and work. Three years after finishing our kitchen remodel I finally put down the thresholds in the doorways! It took exactly 15' for each one. I have no idea why I waited so long, we had the thresholds sitting in the garage. By 2pm on Friday I had filled the hole and so I decided to throw the power bagger on my mower and bag up the cypress fronds covering our yard. We don't generally care, but they get stuck in Purl's fur and she comes in covered in them. It takes a while to pull them out and she is none too happy with us when we do. Three hours later I had the bagger on (after finding all the parts--don't think we have used it for about 10 years, since the last dog we had with this type of fur died) and running, but then I ran out of gas for the mower. I took that as a sign. Thankfully, yesterday it rained and I sat on the couch most of the day cuddling a dog. Today is more of the same of that. Back to marathon training week 1 again tomorrow morning. Thankful that I have three weeks of buffer before I was really supposed to start. |

Nice work. I got in a solid 90 minute ride on the trainer - DOMS from Masters and running yesterday hit me HARD afterwards. We tried to go to one of those little fancy drinky golf driving ranges (you hit balls, drink beer, eat junk) and my body just seized up. Spent an hour in the spa in the afternoon, all better but wow I'm old. Hope all had a great weekend. |

I also spent too much time this weekend shoveling soil, but I think just like training hours, you win this one too. Hope that you've sorted the issues. Well timed though, with 3 weeks leeway before starting your Marathon plan. @Nat, 2 Hard workouts in a row? Damn. Nice work. Especially getting through and not feeling injured. You can officially stop saying your not training now @Nicole, That surgery day is getting close, you must be a mixture of excitement and nerves. Not moving your hip post recovery is going to be tough but at least you've got family to help look after you. Although in the short term your plan sounds harder than what your friend did, long term that could be for the best. Making sure everything is nice and immobilized and able to heal has to be a good thing for the long term prospects. @Mike, so is boozy golf like boozy pool? i.e. do you get better after a few beverages? Haha. Body 'just seized up' doesn't sound good, hope that your back to 100 tomorrow. |

(Week 7/23 for those keeping score) Like usual, not perfect, but pretty solid. Ticking most of the boxes I want to be ticking. Swim: x1, 1,000m, 24 min. As we all know, logistically the swim is hard for me, but after a 3 week absence I found some water. I can still swim, but need to work on that consistency. Bike, x4, 5hr 58min hours, all zwift. Not the best planning this week, all 4 rides were on consecutive days. But got some good work in. Thursdays Cruise intervals ride was my highest 1 hour power average ever (according to strava) Says more about my previous training not being hard enough than any current fitness levels, but still cool. Sunday evening ride was 2 1/2 hours on the trainer, hard work but satisfying. Run, x4, 3hr 7min, 25km. Really only 3 runs, #4 was a run with Mr 7, practicing for his cross country, only 5 minutes/700m worth of running. But it all counts right. No treadmill this week, 1 run with some harder intervals, happy days. Strength and Mobility. x3, 1hr 7min 1 stretching session, 2 PT sessions (plus a visit to the physio which was about 90 minutes, but that doesn't count) Ticking along, fighting the aging process. My weekend was bloody hard work. Saturday was a focus on the cabin project, which to be honest has experienced some 'scope expansion' and is now more of a general landscaping project. A lot of soil got shifted, raising the ground level around the kids playground. Some more sleepers/retaining got installed, decorative stone/pebbles have been laid. And I couldn't even have an afternoon beer because I wanted to get an hour on zwift. (there were a couple after the ride though) Sunday, morning run with a friend (almost missed, slept through my alarm and woke up 15 minutes late) 2 1/2 hours ride in the evening. In between more shifting soil. The big pile that was created when we excavated for the cabin floorplan/foundations is now pretty much gone (much more fun making the pile with a digger, than removing it with a spade and wheelbarrow) Only a bit of smoothing, and laying down some grass seed left. I think 1 more big weekend, and then the end is in site. Upcoming week is another 'rest week' Its needed. Looking forward to some evenings off. I'm going to test some higher watt intervals later this week so I'll you know how it reacts to anaerobic levels, but I'm finding I'm spot on vs. Zwift which seems to vary a little and tends to under-resist my Tacx Flux S. I do run it on a a full-blown gaming PC, but that was for Zwift because of how badly Zwift treats racing. The graphics on TP Virtual are lame right now...it's like you're riding around Surrey Hills in the London world in 1990s mode. But again, it's "free". I did a long ride today with some climbs and descents are much more realistic, as in you can't hit a switchback turn going 60 kph down a mountain. I'll be interested what racing looks like. I'm going to jump back and forth between the two over the next couple of months to see if I like the the free one. or if Zwift is worth $20/month. |
