thanks, so next question: what's a threshold test?

Different testing protocols for different theories of it, but you can do a 20-minute all-out run or bike and there are formulas that give you your numbers.  There's also a ramp-test on the bike which is brutal but way shorter and you can do it in the middle of training block without impacting recovery.  For running I've always used my 10K race pace plus a few seconds per mile.  Tempo runs should be done at your threshold pace.

ummm, I must be stupid I don't get it. If you do a "all out" 20 minutes run it's not at your 10k pace is it (unless you run a 10k in 20 minutes) So if you do a threshold test, you should'nt barf at the end because running 20 minutes at your 10k pace is not especially difficult (given that you normally run a 10k in, say 50- 60 minutes (in my case))

In all cases you will be hammering the 20 minutes on the bike or running, then there is a calculation that extrapolates it to your hour time in watts for the bike, or pace for the run.

It was all out…and I do not think I could run a 10k at that pace! Not, at least, without the aforementioned barfing!

A very ugly 60’ ride today after yesterday’s test. At least there was baseball to watch!

Sick Nat reporting for duty. Not happy, long weekend, great (ish) weather and I find myself in bed feeling sorry for myself. On the plus side, I am not missing any hockey (as we won 4-0, the next game (semi final 1) is not until next Friday) or floorball (Easter weekend, many people away, we decided not to play).

Have a nice weekend!

2150yds in the pool this morning--nothing too special, just a bunch of random stuff the coach posted. I've yet to figure her out in terms of what goals she has for workouts. Our old coach was pretty consistent. MWF was longer sets, TR was shorter sprint sets, and Saturday was a grab-bag dependent on how he felt and who showed up. Quality Wednesday was always murderous.

In about an hour I'm off for a lunchtime run. Weather is beautiful. I'm at a weird point in my work project where it doesn't make much sense to start something big with just a couple of hours to work on Friday, and I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon, so I won't actually get anything done anyway. Yay for spring!

Nice little rest week for me, culminating with a 90’ trainer ride this morning. 6x2.5’ in Z4 was a solid ride, the intervals were doable. I can definitely feel I’m getting stronger.

The week:
Swim 6400 yards 2h 40m 53s
Bike 60.05 miles 3h 30m 05s
Run11.14 miles 2h 25m 05s

Last week was a bit of a wreck for me...two days off for my team offsite then an unscheduled day off on Saturday as I had to run out and buy replacement supplies for the bag we left at the previous resort (they found it and will ship it home for us).  I did get in a great long run yesterday...10K @ a 10:30-ish pace while keeping my HR in zone 2 so I'm starting to gain some run fitness.  Also my longest training run in almost 10 years.  I have a couple of strong workouts scheduled for this week before a short taper going into Saturday's 10K race.

Hope everyone had a great Easter weekend - it was sunny and in the 80s here in Hilton Head and this place is mobbed with people.

Great that your running is coming along (again)

A miserable Easter weekend for me. Still not feeling great but OK now. No training for a while anyway as I going on a work trip to Scotland tomorrow. Unless I can find time and space for a short run. We’ll see

Nat, sorry to hear you're sick! Hopefully your restful weekend, though not ideal, helps you to get better quickly!

Mike, sounds like a crazy few days, but great work on the 10k training run!

I had an amazing weekend with the special friend. I love to show off Baltimore (it's really a pretty amazing city, though obviously I'm biased) and he loves to be a tourist. We went on an almost 5 mile run Friday around the city. Ran up to Johns Hopkins Hospital (where I work), then down to Fells Point (gorgeous neighborhood on the water), then ran along the promenade and back up to my house. Felt really amazing!

He left last night

Got in a 30 min PZ endurance ride and 10 min core workout this morning. My house is still clean and therefore so is my brain Now this week the focus is cleaning up my email...lol

March totals are in!
Swim: 16h 28m 57s - 37600 Yd (up about 10% distance over February)
Bike: 19h 54m 02s - 298.77 Mi (up about 14% timewise)
Run: 13h 42m 53s - 62.14 Mi (one mile more in three hours less--somehow that is good, I'm sure of it!)
Strength: 5h 09m (down 2:35, but I did take a week entirely off)

Overall, happy with March as a training month. It was a hard one, filled with quite a few stumbling blocks throughout.

Monday morning brought a nice 1750yd swim with masters, followed immediately by a really good strength training session. I also caught a glimpse of my arms in the mirror and had my first "ohhh...I can actually see muscles" moment, so it feels like this consistent weight training thing is actually working, which is always motivating!

(4 times). The only upside right now is that I KNOW I can do it, because last week I did 30' of it or harder in my HR Threshold test. I just don't really WANT to do it. :D

Wow, what a busy Easter weekend here. Bit on at work, so I'm only going to do a quick catch up,

@Nat, sorry that you've been feeling under the weather. Hopefully it has properly passed. Yes, always bring a pair of running shoes for work trips. Even if they stay in the bag half the time. At least you have the option if you get a chance. Enjoy Scotland.

@Nicole, Be careful going on social runs with your new special friend... you might accidentally find yourself training for a marathon Good luck cleaning up your inbox... that one is an even more never ending challenge than cleaning the house!

@Mike, Sounds like you've had a busy week of real life. But excellent job on the longest run in a decade It's nice to see the fitness build, and your work give some real results.

@Gretchen, yup 8 1/2 hour 'rest' week is a pretty solid week of training by anyone's measure. Continuing to crush it. Great little motivator you've had with your strength training progress, like I said for mikes run, seeing real proof of progress is a fantastic motivator.

Me.

Very long Easter weekend with family stuff going on. We had a 1st birthday, Easter egg hunts at both grandparents place, and a couple of nights at the beach. Back to work for a rest. For training, what this meant was I got my long run Saturday, but Sunday became an unscheduled rest day.

For the week,
Swim, 0
Bike, 0
Run, 5hr 21min, 41km.
S/M, x3 stretchy sessions, 33 minutes.

This week, race week 1 for the year. Sunday is the Waterfront Half Marathon. I'm excited, by recent standards I'm expecting a good result.

Solid month again Gretchen. A very balanced training load.

For myself:
Swim: 0
Bike, x6, 6hr 15 minm, all zwift
Run, x27, 26hr 38 min, 209km. 1st 200km months and my 3rd consecutive month with most kms ever run.
Strength/Mobility, x11, 1hr 45min. I've just done my 3 biggest ever run months, and I don't feel injured. So hopefully means I'm doing enough.

Obviously I'm in a run focus at the moment, swimming was totally sacrificed, and the bike was not at all prioritized. But happy with what I managed.

Next month, once I'm past my Half Marathon this week I want to make the multisport elements a bit more of a priority. 1 swim and 2 bikes/week would make me happy for now. I'll be doing another Half Marathon build for 10 weeks (after a 'recovery' week) So my running should be pretty similar to the last couple of months. So I'm still in a 'Run focus' mode but I'll be looking for the swim/bike to up my volume from Feb/March.

Two Beers have races this weekend?!?! That can only mean the most wonderful time of the year has arrived--RACE SEASON!!!

I got in a 45' Z2 recovery ride this morning at 0'dark:30--even for me this was early. We had a massive thunderstorm roll through and if the dog hadn't woken me up, the enormous and LOUD thunderclap that I'm pretty sure must have originated in my house did. Anyway, once I was up, I just got in my ride. No use trying to go back to sleep. Around 12:45 I went out for my 1:45 long run. First, the storm system is still rolling through the area, and while we aren't getting any rain this afternoon, the wind is still at 36mph with gusts up to 60mph. I thought I was going backwards at one point. Thankfully, this plan is in time, not distance. Less than two miles into the run I saw a loose dog running around, getting ever closer to the highway. I managed to get her to come to me and sit with me while I called her owner, but then she took off while I was talking to him. She was so very sweet, and 20 years old (Veeshla, if anyone is familiar with the breed). I actually found her again, standing in someone's driveway, watching the owner in his garage. Dude actually shut the garage door without even saying anything while I was standing in the middle of his driveway holding this dog, talking to the owner on my phone--clearly a lost dog situation. I am very much judging him for that move. All in all, the Save Sarah mission took about 20' and while not ideal to have a long break in the middle of the run, no big deal. I carried on and at the 4 mile mark, found a HUGE tree down across the road. The trunk of this thing was at least 18", but probably bigger, as it had snapped off about 3'. That tree was not down when I ran past on the way out (just before seeing Sarah!), so I'm thinking Sarah and I saved each other. I saved her from getting hit by a car on the highway, and she saved me from getting smooshed by a falling tree. Fair trade. The rest of the run was meh--just a bit rough on the legs after a big day yesterday and then the wind just made it not fun. Hard to get into a rhythm when you're constantly grabbing your had to make sure it doesn't fly off and getting pelted by windblown debris, and dodging blowing trashcans (it is garbage day in our neighborhood).

Nice work saving the lost dog Gretchen. Did you know the dog/owner or just can't resist any animal in need? And that's a bit spooky with the falling tree. Glad that you missed it.

I did a 45 minute fartlek workout on the treadmill last night, and a stretchy session. Nothing too exciting.

I did however wake up this morning with a bit of a scratchy throat, a really low HRV measurement, and Garmin has moved my training status to 'strained' :/ Not the perfect taper into a goal race.

Didn't know the owner, but I'm not one to let an animal wander about in situations where they could get hurt. In this case, she was rapidly approaching a pretty well traveled, fairly high speed local road at the point of a blind curve. If she had gotten there, I'm sure she would have gotten hit by a car.

2100yds in the pool this morning. Nothing really special, but it got done. My quads are super sore this morning. I don't know if it is from Monday's weight session or yesterday's 1:45 run, or both (plus all the other stuff). Quads and hip flexors are fine though, so I'm leaning toward it being from weights, since I took a rest from those last week.

Later today, 60' Z2 ride...zzzzzzzzzzz.

Great March, everyone.  I didn't match February's numbers but did have my biggest run month in a long time...well over 60 miles if you include the hiking/walking parts.  April is off to a good start with a short bike warm-up and tempo run yesterday, then a swim/strength morning and lunch bike.  Now a short taper before racing Saturday, then remembering I'm a triathlete for two months and going through a build/peak/taper.

@Gretchen: nice job taking care of the pup, poor thing was probably scared to death and I (still) think you're nuts for heading outside in the weather that you do for training

@Nicole:  glad you're having a good time with the boy and that you have something positive in common to share

We start driving back home tomorrow, it's about 9 hours and we normally just drive it but I need to work in the morning so we're going to break it up.  Yes, I know, Gretchen.

Andrew--I just noticed my Garmin says I'm "peaking" right now...only 18 weeks before my event. :D. Lets make a pact to completely ignore what training phase Garmin says we are in!

Yup, nobody needs the sort of negativity in their life that comes out of Mr Garmin.

FWIW, I was 'peaking' in late Feb. Not quite 18 weeks, but a bit early for an April goal.

In your case though, you've just done a rest week, so it's probably not wrong. Big training, appropriate amount of cut back. You're good to go. Albeit to go increase the training load, not a race
