trucks as if they were a small sports car. I almost got rammed into by a woman today flying out of a drive-thru in her Suburban, then nearly run over by some young, dumb macho boy in his F250 mega pickup. I think this behavior is quite common here in Colorado.

LOL I have a Suburban and a Sierra. But I also have a LeMond and a Griffen. Does that balance out.

I do, but for different reasons. I live 5 minutes outside of Philadelphia, and my drive home can be stressful. Mostly, the roads around here are very crowded, and not all that wide, so larger vehicles tend to be difficult to handle. Also, inevitably, some j@ck@$$ decides to try to parallel park their Range Rover on the main road. This, of course, ties up traffic for the next 15 minutes, because they A) drive a vehicle too big for the space, and B) don't know how to parallel park in the first d@mn place. But it takes a MINIMUM of 3 tries before determining that they cannot successfully fit a 15' vehicle in a 10' parking space.

I also love the ones who feel the rules of physics do not apply to them because they drive a Lexus/beamer/benz/whatever, and try to occupy the same physical space as I currently am. Do they not teach people to look where they want to go to make sure it's open anymore? Or am I just crazy?

Suburbans and Pickup trucks at least have some purpose.  What gets me is the Hummers...what, did you have to conquer any enemy territory or do some serious 4-wheelin' on the way to the grocery store?  I hate those things!

I find it humorous to see these types of vehicles where I live, in downtown Miami.  There isn't an "off road" within 100 miles of Miami, yet I see Hummers and Escalades a plenty.  I just laugh.

The only problem I had was the Saratoga housewife (Saratoga is a very affluent area near San Jose, many of the wives sort of live in their own little world, thus the term Saratoga Housewife was coined and used by the masses) who was dressed to the nines and driving a full size hummer.  And she drives it as if she is going through a war zone.  I have been almost run over twice by her.  I use to work with someone who knew this woman.  It was her car and she has no kids and no reason to be driving a tank.  She doesn't live in the country...just made no sense to me.

Can you name the truck with four wheel drive,
smells like a steak and seats thirty-five..

Canyonero! Canyonero!

Well, it goes real slow with the hammer down,
It's the country-fried truck endorsed by a clown!

Canyonero! (Yah!) Canyonero!
[Krusty:] Hey Hey

The Federal Highway comission has ruled the
Canyonero unsafe for highway or city driving.

Canyonero!

12 yards long, 2 lanes wide,
65 tons of American Pride!

Canyonero! Canyonero!

Top of the line in utility sports,
Unexplained fires are a matter for the courts!

Canyonero! Canyonero! (Yah!)

She blinds everybody with her super high beams,
She's a squirrel crushing, deer smacking, driving machine!

Canyonero!-oh woah, Canyonero! (Yah!)

Drive Canyonero!

Woah Canyonero!

I'm ok with big trucks and suburbans if and ONLY if they have a hitch!!  If it's being used for something, hauling horses, hay, etc...then you deserve that size vehicle.  When you have a dually or Hummer and it doesn't have a speck of dirt on it...get a life!!

I see (stereotype ahead) so many 5' no kids housewives have these huge vehicles and not know how to drive them.  I don't think they should know how to drive them...they shouldn't have them in the first place!!  If I can fit all the food I can eat in 1 week (which is a lot) in the back of my wife's Mini cooper, then they can fit all they need inside a "normal" car.

AND...if you do decided to have one of the above said cars...DO NOT EVEN BREATH a word about Gas prices being too high.

Sorry...didn't mean that to turn into a rant.  I'll get back to work now.  :P

hitch. agreed.

one of the first things malte asked off the plane from germany is: "WHY DO SO MANY AMERICANS DRIVE BIG OFF ROAD CARS?" good f'in question! half of them would end up gutted if you actually rode them off-road (and hey, a rental firebird did just as well on utah jeep roads as most SUVs would)...and of the rest, only a small number are actually used as intended (hauling stuff). unless you're hauling a boat, horses, or a farmer - wtf? my brother in law bought an SUV because maybe someday he'll get a boat? what is that? way to put the cart before the horse. maybe i should start shopping for my mansion now, in case i win the lottery.

there was some study i read about several years ago about how people who drive SUVs versus minivans, were less happy and wanted to be 'sexy', as compared to the minivan drivers who were happier and happy in their marriage. couldn't find anything about via google, so you'll just have to take my word for it. hostely, i think people want to look hardcore. how many times i have i seen an xterra driver flicking a cigarette out the window? right, you are an athlete, mr. xterra. want to look hard-core. ride your flippin' bike!

here's my SUV, complete with kickstand. the bumper sticker on the top tube 'my other car is a bike' :

I fear Dualies with goose-neck trailers.  It always gives me crab cakes in my shorts when I think the truck has passed and then along comes the trailer.  It'll probably be a housewife in a Suburban talking on her cell phone that will mort me out though.

Sounds as bad as the woman in Woodside who nearly ran me over in her Rolls Royce, as she feverishly made a lefthand turn in front of me and into the driveway of her gated palacial "estate."

I guess it's because of the mis-conception of "big vehicles are safer".  But many of those drivers who got into accidents due to their worse than average driving skill.  Driving a bigger vehicle makes them more prone to accident (no sense of space, making unnecessarily wide turns etc).  When they got into accidents, what they see is the unfortunate small car they hit got totalled while their big truck/SUV has only a scratch on the bumper.  This re-inforced their believe of "big cars are safer".  What they didn't realized is many times they were the onces causing the accidents.

I'm sure it's not always the case, but once I would have got killed when an SUV with AWD going at full speed, passing everyone, on a 4-lane highway on a freezing-rainy New England day, decided to change lanes 1/4 mile before an exit, skidded and heading uncontrollably toward me - driver's side.  I had 2 options:  1.) brake to slow down to avoid it and risk skidding and/or get hit by the car behind, or 2.) move one lane to the right where a car is further away behind but again risk skidding.  I took the chance to change lane, hit some pile of snow/ice on the front wheel and started spinning.  My car stalled after a 1 and 3/4 of a circle, car position parallel to traffic, wheels locked.  Fortunately all other cars were going slow enough to stop right behind me.  That SUV crashed to the side of the highway, bending the side rails.  Can't imagine what happened if it crashed onto my car.

Does any else also take offense when people who drive a humongous monstrosity of a vehicle complain about gas prices? I HATE hearing that one. If you have the green to drive an Escalade, either:
1. you have enough money to not worry that gas went up 2 cents a gallon today OR
2. drive a smaller damn car!

i personally drive a 1996 piece o' junk saturn 4 door w/119k miles that is really only used to transport my Cervelo and me to work. Since I'm a strapped for cash 20 something, I feel I can complain about gas prices. 50 year old Brentwood, TN (uppity, uppity town) millionaires probably don't need to fret over it...

the little car drivers just need to remember i can't stop that thing on a dime.. i can't tell you how many times some little car has darted out in front of me in heavy traffic.. or they camp out in a blind spot..

we all just need to share the road

Yeah, well, the big truck drivers need to realize that they can't fit into a parking space designated for a normal car, and that they can't change lanes in a shorter amount than a small car.

I think the bottom line is that people that drive like idiots, **** us all off. They drive all sorts of vehicles, but the most obnoxious by far are the "big truck" crowd. I drive a 05 Ford-F-150 4X4. I know that some people drive trucks like bullies and I get pissed just the same as everyone else. In fact, I usually go out of my way to do the speed limit or just under when an SUV is tailgating me. For the record, I have a hitch, to pull wood and my boat. (and protect my bumper in parking lots)
I also live in Missouri in a town of about 1000 people where you need to be able to occasionally cross overflowed streams and have somethin to toss your firewood in

I think though, that for someone like me, who lives in a fairly urban area, the number of SUV's and large trucks is way too high, sometimes to the point where it can be dangerous. The roads here are pretty narrow at points, and there's street parking EVERYWHERE.

Can I hate that my wife bought a large pickup? (It was acutally a christmas "present" to me.)

Its worked out well as a SAG wagon...holds lots of people, bikes, supplies etc....

Point One: In the WSJ earlier this week there was an article about teh size of our vehicles creeping up in accordance with the size of our population. Meaning we are a bunch of fatties and need bigger cars to haul our lazy behinds around

Mac:are the escalades and hummers filled with "g's" and bling? Fo sho they be rollin on dubs and donks.

I can't stand people who buy pickups and put bigass rims on them. Or buy a Cadillac Escalade and put rims so big it rides like a freaking stagecoach. Idiotic.
Or have steroes so loud I can hear it from inside my house as they pass by.

It's all a part of a capitalist society create a product and sell it to someone to make money.

I hope you're not saying that is a bad thing?
