Subject: Time to stop....and think

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings, but shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees, but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life; not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes--but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete...

Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.

Remember, to say, "I love you" to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak and give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

George Carlin

I like it. Through a Series of Unfortunate Events, I was able to make a lot of lovely changes to my life, much to the utter horror of some of my coworkers...

I've added life to my years, slow food, love, and much more laughter. I will never forget the awe of a little one at an 8K last spring when *I* careened over to her side of the course to snag a high five - I don't know who it may have meant more to, her or me.

I'll admit I live in too much space, but that's for the dog - all he knows is he has a yard and loves it.

Subject: Snopes says:

"George Carlin very emphatically denied he had had anything to do with "Paradox," a piece he referred to as "a sappy load of shit," and posted his comments about being associated with this essay on his own website.

The true author of the piece is neither George Carlin nor Jeff Dickson, nor is he anonymous. Credit belongs with Dr. Bob Moorehead, former pastor of Seattle's Overlake Christian Church. (He retired in 1998 after 29 years in that post). The essay appeared under the title "The Paradox of Our Age" in Words Aptly Spoken, Dr. Moorehead's 1995 collection of prayers, homilies, and monologues used in his sermons and radio broadcasts."

George Carlin:

"PARADOX OF OUR TIME" One of the more embarrassing items making the internet/e-mail rounds is a sappy load of **** called "The Paradox of Our Time." The main problem I have with it is that as true as some of the expressed sentiments may be, who really gives a ****? Certainly not me.

I figured out years ago that the human species is totally ****** and has been for a long time. I also know that the sick, media-consumer culture in America continues to make this so-called problem worse. But the trick, folks, is not to give a ****. Like me. I really don't care. I stopped worrying about all this temporal bullshit a long time ago. It's meaningless. (See the preface of "Braindroppings."

Another problem I have with "Paradox" is that the ideas are all expressed in a sort of pseudo-spiritual, New-Age-y, "Gee-whiz-can't-we-do-better-than-this" tone of voice. It's not only bad prose and poetry, it's weak philosophy. I hope I never sound like that. "

Mr. Carlin prefers that no one think that the "sappy load of shit" came from him. But you're welcome!

little george carlin side notes...

+ went to see him do stand up when i was just out of high school. there were these frat boy types who were laughing and laughing at all the profantity, but when he started talking about closing golf courses to put up low income housing, and started in on social justice and politics, the frat boys got very quiet and confused.

+ george carlin does the narration for some of the episodes of 'thomas the tank engine'. i delight in this. he does the best accent for the scottish twins, donald and douglas. anyway, my friend sonja was unfamiliar with mr. carlin's other work. her son is as into thomas as fiona is...so she was very familiar with his voice. she was listening to the radio one night and they were playing a bit of carlin's stand up. sonja thought 'boy, he sounds just like the guy from the thomas shows...but what a foul mouth!' hee hee.

i love that. that's totally me, and i do want more bike paths, but its still funny. and he's right...saving the 'planet' is more about keeping things livable for humans, not really about the planet itself.

Carlin, despite his own genius and hilarious insight, is not the final arbiter of what has value. If the paradox of time has meaning for you, fcuk George carlin. I'm sure he would agree.
