The Musselman Triathlon, one of the jewels of the national triathlon calendar, is proud to
announce that a new race has been added to race weekend for 2007. USA Triathlon, the
governing body for the sport in the United States, has awarded the Musselman an ITU Pan
American Cup race, one of only five such races in the country next year.

An ITU Pan American Cup is contested by professional triathletes only and carries with it a
$20,000 prize purse, split evenly between men and women for the top five finishers. “ITU” stands for International Triathlon Union, the international governing body for the sport of triathlon and the organization responsible for triathlon being added to the Olympic Programme in 2000. Pan American Cup participants earn world ranking points, which are then used to determine qualifiers for the Olympic Trials.

With the addition of this olympic-distance race in 2007, the Musselman will alter its schedule ofevents to make it possible for all amateur athletes to watch the Pan American Cup. The mini-Mussel sprint race will move to Saturday, July 14, and will conclude just before the start of the Pan American Cup. The Musselman half-iron will remain on Sunday, July 15, as will the
MusselKids race for children. ITU-style racing is vastly different from traditional amateur triathlon. Athletes are allowed to draft one another during the bike leg, and race courses typically consist of multiple loops to allow spectators the chance to see the athletes for a majority of the race. The Musselman ITU race will consist of 2 laps of swimming, 8 laps on the bike, and 5 laps on the run before finishing by the lake in Seneca Lake State Park. The post-race awards ceremony will take place during the Musselman pre-race dinner, affording all athletes the chance to recognize the victors.

Registration is now open for 2007 at the Musselman website. The race sold out in 2006 with
1,043 participants from 31 states and five provinces in Canada.

More information about the Musselman can be found at www.musselmantri.com.

A blatant, uncompensated, unconditional and unasked-for endorsement: I love this race.

Man I'd love to see this too.  I'm usually in Upstate NY (Watertown region) this time of the year but do a local sprint up there on this weekend.  Hmmm, skip the local tri and go watch this or do the local tri and head up and watch IMLP....

Very cool...I raced Mussleman in 2004 and had a really good time there.  Lovely place, and well-organized race.  They'll just need *more parking* for the bigger crowds!

Congrats to Jeff and the others who make it happen.

Now this is odd: I've lived in two areas besides Rochester, NY. Both towns next to DRM and SunnyS: Cocoa Beach FL and Somerville MA.

Assuming I rehab my knee over the next 3 months (read:  it isn't jacked badly enough to cancel my entire next season), I'll be there, doing the half.   Having been an ex-upstater, and having done my first tri there (Cazenovia), this'll be a bit of a homecoming.

What an awesome race this is!! I plan on making this a weekend of tri's, cheering on the sprinters on Saturday and doing the 1/2 on Sunday.

Jeff Henderson does an unbelievable job with the organization of the race.  The volunteers are enthusiastic and really know their job, the professional course sweepers did a great job and Geneva Bikes' support is top notch. (I heard that they actually fixed over 40 flat tires in the transition area while the athletes were in the water!!!)

Also offered is an AquaBike for those who are injured and can't run or for those who want to gradually move up to the 1/2 IM distance!! I did this last year due to an injury. You start off with your wave in the Musselman but get to chow down while others are agonizing through the 13.1 miles of run!!

Now to have a pro bike race to watch as well!!

Hope to see a good number of BTers there!!!
